Thread: The Art and Craft of Resource Hunting
How do I do this? Neither the Artisan or Weaponsmith faq's really ocver this. Survey for high concentrations, slap down a harvester, rinse, repeat?
What do I have to worry about as far as power goes?
And where and how can i sell resources i won't need for cash? I only have 100k from my combat alt, which isn't enough for a heavy extractor. Just lump them in 2k piles and sell for 6k each on the bazzar? (anything else i can sell for cash until I get WUK and AUK's?).
First things first weaponsmiths do not need massive amounts of resources such as other crafting professions. Thirty thousand of something can last near forever. Giveing you plenty of time to catch it later when it is of better quality. As far as heavy harvesters go you are probabally thinking a bit too grand. A ber 4 personal is relatively inexpensive going for at most two thousand credits, and if you make it yourself its free. Besides these do provide some bonuses that other harvesters dont. Less placeing restrictions will let you get at many high unutilized pockets. Most will tell you that its the way of things you find a great deposit but have to place your medium one hundred and fifty meters from the highest consentration. They also cut down on terrain you have to cover. With the lesser restrictions you can easily get a harvester on a high concentration in no time. Ber ten mediums more then meet resource needs for a very long time. After all a weaponsmtih uses from fourty to fifty different resources. So you will probabally not be running out if you have a decent amount of anything above twenty thousand units.
Money is a fair concern, and your probabally looking to use your smith to supplement your combat profession. At the beginning though its better to work in reverse. Novice weaponsmiths do not make money. That is just the way of things. Better to get master and craft from that base. Rather then paying maint on a house factories, and makeing no return on weapons nobody wants. Here is the cheapest way to do it. Go up munitions to two and make the heavy warheads. All you need for this is generic steel radioactive thoranium steel hydron 3 gas skeevon gas. Take the month to purely mine what you are going to need at master, and when these resources spawn mine them up. Doing heavy warheads greatly increases the speed of the grind. In other words why speed two days macroing barrels when you can do it with heavies in six hours.
Power there are two ways to look at it mine it yourself or buy it. Usually depends on where you live and what people sell it at. I can buy power five thousand units for six thousand credits. In other places I have seen it going at three credits a unit. So its really a judgement call. If your local market is over chargeing put two of your harvesters on it and use it to power all your harvesters. Makeing money by harvesting is relatively easy radioactive always sells. If you mine a fantastic resource save in for a few weeks then sell it. People are more frugal when they can mine it themselves. Lastly do not be a quality lunatic a resource that seems aweful might be a specific resource. Things like axidite iron or rhodium steel look awful, but people have to have them reguardless of the quality.
Best advice is to read all the sticky threads at the top of this forum. Use www.swgcraft.com to find out what resources are in to save travel money. Talk with other crafters you will be surprised how much help you will get if you offer equal help. If you have found a increadibly high concentration or found a uber resource share the info. Most people will reciprocate on what they have noticed about what is in spawn.
