Thread: What to do with this steel

Hello, I'm rather new to weaponsmithing (haven't reached master yet, even), but I've started gathering resources for when I do. Right now, on my server (Eclipse), there's a rather good duralloy steel in spawn (Reofi, 965 SR). I am planning on specialising in melee weapons, so I've put all my harvesters to mining this steel. I'm currently getting 250k/day of this. Now, I've learned that there are many better duralloys out there, and that it's not that good. Should I use this steel to grind through WS (and still have a bit left after that), or shouldI stock up as much as possible for later use? I ask for your advice in this.

Thanks for all help in advance!

"not that good"???

No, it's not *perfect* (ie 1000sr), but it's still pretty darn good.

That Steel will allow you to Experiment up to 96% of the weapon bar on most Melee Weapons, other materials notwithstanding (ie if you need to mix it witl 700sr Copper, the max % drops).

It's your call what you do with it, but in your shoes, I'd set aside 100k-200k for when you want to actually make weapons, and grind with whatever you have left over.

Ok, I'll save it, then. I'm going to gather 1 mill or so of it, then I'll probably try and sell 200k and buy grinding resources for that money. That leaves me with 800k of good steel. Thanks for the advice!

That is okay steel but not spectacular by any stretch. I cannot say about other servers but on sunrunner that is considered quite poor.

Bah, SR965 to me, is very good, in regards to building and crafting melee weapons.

Not sure what the other stats are, but if anything, if you plan to craft swords or other items (Speederbikes?) then that would be worthwhile to use...

(gah, can't remember what was used in Bikes, in regards to which stat is looked at)

What bollocks. 965SR steel is damn good at any time on any server. Yes, you obviously have better steel and perhaps so do your mates, but you've been keeping an eye out for the stuff for months now, I bet. For someone just starting out with weaponsmith, 965SR steel is unarguably good stuff for someone who said he wants to make melee weapons.

I've just started recently, too, and have been doing a lot of research into what makes a good resource. My conclusions so far are that:

  • Obviously the stat caps (see link in my sig for the details) define the absolute limits for each stat
  • The history of your server refines this 'goodness' in terms of what has been available to crafters in the past (and what the senior crafters still probably have stocks of)
  • You need to look ahead in the crafting tree and start looking out for good resources even if you're not going to need them for some time
  • Ultimately, anything with a stat in the 900s is pretty damn good, even if the capped range is 800-1000! If you come across something better in the future, all well and good, but just because you hear from someone who's been collecting steel for 6 months that they happen to have a couple of million 999OQ 999UT 999SR steel tucked away for a rainy day doesn't mean you should waste your 965SR steel on a grind! There's plenty of sub-800SR steel to grind on!!!

Good luck as a smith!

Aethal Sar, Weaponsmith. Retired from game - probably missing it already!

Thanks again. I decided to get 300k of this steel, then move all my harvesters to the new 356 UT desh copper that spawned last night (already moved half of them). I'm going to have to run a lot of missions, now, since I don't have the heart to waste my steel

Well it is OK.

but sadly you missed SR 987 duralloy and SR 993 Iron.

To se how good stuff you got check swgcraft.com and then use FIND RESOURCE option, select steel and 100% SR and hit FIND and then you will get results

He may have missed pulling it out of the ground, but I find that inevitibly, people stock the current spawn of metal on the bazaar and on their vendor.

Just take a wander around various vendors. You'll eventually find someone stocking it at 2-3cpu.

Duralloy steel three memorable spawns in the last four months 976 977 1000. Kammris a couple memorable spawns 989 992. My point is he should get fifty k and sit tight till better comes. Otherwise he will have a pile of grinding materials. Like I said not to sure about other servers but that seems lackluster for what the steel is truely capable of.

Weaponsmithing has a lot to to with organization

For instance, does that duralloy steel have any other redeeming qualities besides the SR? Let's assume that somewhere down the road better SR stuff spawns. If it has good stats elsewhere then keep it. If not sell it on the bazaar for 2cpu. You'll make a good profit off of it while keeping those grindbots happy.
