Here are a few answers, I'm sure there will be more forth coming as everyone has different opinions about these topics.

1] The more experimentation points you put into one hit the bigger the chance of getting a unwanted result. If you are making a schematic then you are shooting for all greats. The number of points needed to fill a single bar may add up differently depending on if you do them all in one hit or a few at a time. I have found doing 2 by 2 gives me the best results over all and can usually manage an extra point or two left over with this method. But have a go at it yourself and see how things work for you. No one can really give you a 100% answer on this as no one has ever done a reliable study of it. And yas, assembly skill makes a difference in your overall success rates, as do city specializations. The quality of crafting tool and station are two things which may also have an effect on this, but I've never tried to test it with myself so can't say for sure about this one.

2] Adv rifle barrels are not worth using. These are about the only ones that everyone agrees on. The general rule is regular components have lower damage but better speed. So for high damage weaponry most people like the regular components as small damage difference in sub-components is not as good as a point or two extra speed.

3] In the current live code, it is said no number is used for resources without the required stats. So the CD/OQ score of a gemstone with an OQ of 800 is 800.

Probably the best advice anyone can give you about these things is to test it yourself and believe your own findings. There are so many rumors and rubbish hanging around it is impossible to be sure what is correct and what is not. So unless you see it in an official post or faq, then don't place any blind faith in it.

It's great to see a new smith on the up and coming, especially on the coolest server in the game

Soar pegged it pretty well .. will elaborate on one of your questions

3) Yes it disregards the missing value on a resource and exclusively uses the value the resource does have (just looks at OQ on a gem, ore, or gas) but it ALSO then adds more weight to the ignored value (Conductivity) on those resources that DO have that stat. So your metals will be weighted more towards conductivity than quality rather than 50/50.

Item requires 50 metal and 50 ore

Example 1)

Ore - OQ 800

Metal - CD 900, OQ 800

Example 2)

Ore - OQ 800

Metal - CD 800, OQ 900

You would think these two would come out the same, but the 1st example will actually be slightly better as the conductivity in the metal will be weighted more heavily since the ore has no conductivity.

Having been reading this forum since getting novice weaponsmith a month ago (A title I still wear above my head) I like to think I am doing things the right way: Not grinding straight to the end and wondering why I cant sell any d17's at 10k apeice, resource hunting while going through the ranks, but I still have a few questions that I would like answered.

1. Experimentation: This is interesting as I see many people advocating a 4/3/fill style, and people advocating an all in one go style. My personal experience is that I get better figures on the product using 4/3/fill style, mainly as using every point in one go gives me nothing but (mod/good) Success. First of all, is this mainly due to the lack of Master (i.e. lack of assembly skill/experimentation points), or something else?

2. Advanced Subcomponents: Which of these are worth using? I've heard people stating that some barrels are not worth using, and the advanced scope is worthless. Are there any hard and fast rules about which subcomponents I really shouldn't be using (and therefore easing my groaning resource list).

3. Materials in subcomponents: Howare materials that are missing a stat during the build treated? For example, when making a Blaster-pistol barrel, I am required to add a gemstone. This gemstone has no CD rating which is nessecary for the build: WHAT number is used in its place?

Lastly, I am looking forward to becoming a master in this profession, it seems to be good fun and the "hey d00d, ur wepons r0xx0r" messages are always satisfying (even if they were about a bunch of DL44's I'd made...)
