... ... branch from "The payoff for weaponsmith is as it should be, at the master level."
I think we can all agree that as things are right now, the weaponsmith tree is designed such that the "master" skill box is the only one worth having. Everything else is just a stepping stone towards master, and is essentially "work" to get to the end goal.
As such, I submit that we simplify the weaponsmith skill tree thusly:
------------------------
| Master Weaponsmith | (620 AXP, 1 skill point)
------------------------
|
|
------------------------
| Grinding Weaponsmith | (896000 WCXP, 56 skill points)
------------------------
|
|
------------------------
| Novice Weaponsmith | (2100 GCXP, 6 skill points)
| Master Weaponsmith | (620 AXP, 1 skill point)
------------------------
|
|
------------------------
| Grinding Weaponsmith | (896000 WCXP, 56 skill points)
------------------------
|
|
------------------------
| Novice Weaponsmith | (2100 GCXP, 6 skill points)
------------------------
Good idea? Bad idea? The process to get to master is essentially unchanged, though the projectile rifle barrel and heavy warhead schematics should get moved down to "novice" so that the "grinding weaponsmiths" have something to grind. Put all of the other schematics in "grinding weaponsmith", and put all the assembly/experimentation in "master weaponsmith". Done.

I dunno, when I was grinding up master, I could still make and sell weapons, way before I even finished the techniques tree.
It's all about finding a market.
At techniques 0 and 1, I sold to newbies in bestine "Hey, can you make me a weapon?" (they were wearing the newbie starting clothing) "Sure." and I'd charge them like 500 credits.
Then, at techniques 2 and 3, you've got the bazaar. I sold plenty of weapons there.
At techniques 4, you can begin to sell on your own vendor, however you can't charge much, and should be close to a newbie infested area.
And, the entire time up weaponsmith, you can always sell crates of C12 grenades, and WUKs.

the problem with weaponsmith though, is it is so competitive compared to any other profession.
Many players want "the best", and with the inflated economies, there are plenty of players out there willing to pay over a million credits for "the best" weapon.
