Thread: Thinking of going WS...

Hey all. I'm new to this board so I'm gonna ask some dumb questions.

First off, I originally started my character as an Artisan, but way back in the day Intrepid was young and I didn't have the patience, resources or money to grind any crafting profession. So I went Scout, Marksman, and eventually got my way to CH. I'm not too proud of that, but whatever.

As it stands now, I'm a Master Scout, have some Ranger skills, and have 4,4,3,3 in Artisan and will hit Master Artisan the next time I am in-game.

From there I wish to make vehicles, but would also like to get an elite crafting profession.WS always interested me, but so did Weaponsmith. So now I have a decision to make and would like some information.

Do you guys recommend this profession? How broke is it? Where do you see it going? Are there any big updates the Dev's have planned that I should know about??

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm assuming you mean WS and Armorsmith interested you? If so, just doa search on this board, this advice was pretty well laid out from the WS point of view a few days ago.

As for how broken it is...check the sticky about WS issues. I'd say we're better off than most, and the majority of issues at this point are annoyances (i.e. xxx is the only weapon worth using in this tree, why do we have all the others)

Also, go read TH's post from last night about "The Art of Combat" which outline the monumental changes going into weapons over the next couple months (along with combat in general, very exciting stuff)

I definately recommend weaponsmithing, if you've developed your patience that is I've pretty much run the gamet on activities in this game, and i can honestly say that there's been nothing as satisfying as seeing someone come into my shop after they've just earned enough money for that gun they've been eyeing, or finally got xxx skill and can't wait to try out your gun. Seeing a truly satisfied customer gives me that warm-fuzzy feeling every time. It's a nice validation after the enormous time and effort that goes on behind the scenes.

That said, WS is not for the weak. Seriously. Being the single commodity in the game that almost every player needs, you'll have to deal with all sorts of customers. /tell hell, as it's called, is really not fun. You'll get new player or obnoxious child telling you constantly, wanting "the best gun" (obviously showing they have no clue how weapons work). Then ones who bought crappy slices off the bazaar, come telling you your weapons suck, and you charge too much because they just don't understand what's going on. After explaining certain things to the combat characters, that they should really know and shouldn't have to come to a WS to find out, it does get frustrating.

Then, of course, you have to get the resources. The grind is cake compared to that. To compete, especially on Intrepid where we've had some very fortunate shifts of the rare stuff, you absolutely must have the best resources. Period. Then, if you decide to settle down in a high traffic area (Coronet, Theed, AH/Bestine) you'll be plagued by the constant flow of customers, and will likely have trouble keeping your vendor stocked. If you settle out of the way more, you'll have a much harder time convincing people to come to your shop, and it will be much harder to compete in the resource / krayt / other buying that is necessary.

That's really the worst of it though. As I said, there are times when it will be very fulfilling, and others where it'll seem like a job you don't get paid for. If you can deal with these things, though, I'd say go for it.

Awesome, thanks for the help.

It's also nice to see someone from Intrepid helpin me out. I just don't know if I'm up for trying to compete with you guys all the time. As it stands now, I'm not very rich.

It can be very rewarding, especially when you start drawing repeat customers. I reccomend this profession if you like to create things (not just craft them). And going from novice to master is a lot like going from nerd to dating the prom queen. Once you're there everybody likes you (well, except broke arse noobs.) Just be sure to look up the schematic resource requirements ahead of time, so you can start collecting them as you move up. A good source for that info is www.swgcraft.com. Oh, and please don't post about the what's the quickest way to gind to master. We have about 40,000 posts/answers to than on here already.

Thanks for the info. And I'm thinking I'll grind to Novice with Vehicles and just figure it out on my own from there. I like doin that.

I agree completely with Sabacc's comments. The biggest key will be patience. Be prepared to spend a lot of time gathering the materials to make weapons. Weaponsmith has the toughest requirements of any of the professions. After making Master, it will take an additional two or three months before you have all of the high quality materials necessary to make quality weapons. You will probably find that the melee tree will be the easiest to find the metals for. The various rare metals will take some time after that.

Having a PA or friends that are willing to help with the harvesting is a huge help also...

Have fun...

I just started Weaponsmithing on Intrepid also. It's a long slow grind and I just got my first box yesterday after several days of grinding, surveying for resources, setting up harvestors, and doing artisan missions for money. I've found in my personal experience that once you get through setting up your infrastructure and you can get down to the brass tax of it smithing is way to much fun. I can't wait till I get my next box because i know right now it'll be in Int. Firearms. My first was in Int. Melee. I've made and sold several Metal staves already for 500 credits a piece, and I've made half a dozen of my custom looking D18 pistols.

Making the custom pistols with scopes and cool looking barrels is way cool. They look very unique compared to the standard pistols you always see. Also feels good when at novice you make something that sells. It has encouraged me to keep it going and grind my mental health away looking at the tools for hours.
