I have recently mastered weaponsmith. I have noticed some funny things about components. First of all, my advanced melee components seem far superior to looted Geo Cores. Are mine really good or is my loot not very good?
The real question is my Regular components made from really good non-specific resources can be as good or better than advanced components it seems. My example is vibro knucklers. Class 3 Solid Petro finally spawned on my server, so I made some Advanced Vibro Units (AVU). The vibro knucklers came out the same as using regular components about 2.2 speed and 146 max damage.
So using the resources needed for AVU, the UT ranges from 308-372 for Desh copper and 680-754 for platinite copper. But, using regular components I can make the VU with 950+ UT duralloy steel and ~780 UT polysteel copper. I didn't look yet, which is why I asking here (this is eating away at me today), but I am guessing that my AVUs and my BVUs are very similar.

Advanced components have higher base values than regular. So you build Advanced Vibro Units with inferior resources but they are as good as your regulars, aren't they ?
You should also look at all stats when comparing the components. For some the damage value is nearly the same, but Advanced components often have much better Range values.
I use Advanced components allmost exclusively, they are allways the same or better than my regular ones.

Not all Advanced components are always better, even if you use the best resources on them. For example using non Adv. blaster rifle barrels in flame throwers makes them about .2 faster, and thus, better. I make my T-21's with non adv. rifle barrels, why? because they only come out about 2 damage less but there .2 faster. Most adv. components are better for most uses though.

Base 25-25/-.4 Geo cores are junk to any MWS. I tell my guildies that if the base stats aren't in the high 30s, then don't even call stats. I don't want them. Cores that are really worth collecting are few and far between, but some can have a stat or 2 that stand out...
