I took up WS recently just for the fun of it and to help out my town (our resident smith quit the game ). As an infrequent player I can only generally get on a few nights a week so im kind of planning to do special orders for guildmates and myself and try to use the top quality resources for it.

I was just wondering if anyone else on the board does this or if you are all hard nosedbusiness people

Also do you think this is feasable or will I get bankrupted by the resource demandsof the profession.

Cheers

Deos this answer your question?

I find tinkering to be more fun then going out and fighting sometimes.

To be honest, I do the same thing. I am constantly hunting the geo caves on my main char for xp and in search for spider venom (1 month later, nothing), so I had loads of geo loot piling up, so I decided to make my alt a WS. I'm doing it just to help out guildies and to use up all these silly geo items I have laying around, so I can relate to you. If anything, you can ask guildies for help with the resources, because afterall you'd be helping them out. You might be better off if you made a VK vendor or something like that... it'd make things easier financially.

I mostly tinker because I don't have millions to devote to resource buying and because the WH weapons market is already saturated.

Whenever someone in my guild needs a weapon, they let me know and I do my best. My best is pretty damn good.

The truth of the matter is the market is utterly saturated, and unlesss you put the serious effort in to get the good stuff which even with vendors your going to have to hold your breath mine. Some resources look so god awful resource merchants will not touch them. Meenwhile here you are trying to make a t21 and you need some polonium.

So the complex answer is no your not doing your guildies a favor. Until you got a ton of killer resources your going to be more akin to a leach on your guild. Makeing truely subpar weapons. Its far better for them to simply buy from an established smith. The market is too saturated, and your guild will be better off buying from someone who took the time to know what they are doing.

Simple answer is yes you can help your guildies by being a weaponsmith. From makeing wuks, but another good idea is makeing grenades for those people that are grinding. Is this really worth it not really.

My advice if you are actually looking to do a decent weaponsmithing. Take your time research the materials you will need and take the time to collect them up. You do not need to master weaponsmith for maybe a month, and your not really saveing time or money by buying resources. Odds are you will spend more on the resources then they are worth in the weapon anyway.

Lastly weaponsmithing takes time there is no way around it you will have to hunt down over fifty resources. Run factories make schematics. So expect to spend atleast twelve hours per week doing it.

ehehe, yup..I mostly just tinker around for myself and my friends..spent alot of money on top notch ressources and getting the 12 pts, so I could go mainstream, but I don't feel the need to run factories and all that...

I've actually been tinkering with Ws, As and Chef, getting my alt up to +12 in all 3 professions

I will "Second" the reply about it being VERY time consuming and VERY costly to aquire the best resources.

It will cost millions to get get +11 and +12.

You will be hard pressed to find the best resources under 10cpu.

You will need factories.

Tons of storage space.

Vendors.

A shop to put vendor.

etc, etc.

Don't enter weaponsmithing in a whimsical fashion. I've watched it gobble up many a player and spit them out who tried dabbling in it.

Thanks for all responses on this it is interesting to see the view points being split. However just to stir the debate a little I will add that im only running two harvester and will have some time to devote over the next couple of months to finding those perfect resources maybe 2 per week or so. I have consulted the help pages on this so I have an idea on what I need as far as quality goes.

Also on a bit of a side issue dont you think the collecting of resources has become a little easier with JTLS as travel is free and having that miner on Endor is not the crippeling burden it was as Ijust jump im my trusty A wing and fly over for free! Dont take my previous post the wrong way im not dabbeling to a minor extent im just going to be a very slow accumulator of quality resources. I do have patience though as I have been a master ranger lol.

two harvestors is not going to cut it. I do ONLY custom orders. I have no vendor and never will. I hate the idea of spending all my spare time crafting and harvesting just so i can supply a vendor that requires constant attention.

The key to successfully pull off what your trying to do, is simply to be good at what you do. I make some of the best weapons on our server, but I never have and never will stock a vendor with loads of normal weapons, for two reasons. The first reason i won't run a normal weapons vendor is that it will simply take up too much of my time doing something that I don't enjoy(I enjoy making custom weapons, I dont' enjoy making factory runs). The second reason is that personally I feel normal weapons are a waste of the top end resources that I use. I spent a significant amount of time and money to get my resource collection and my tapes, etc... and to blow through that for weapons that are only base damage is just very irritating to me, and it feels like a complete waste of my time and effort to collect. I have resources that date back to the original release of the game and could not imagine putting them into normal weapons even if it does slightly increase their stats.

if you only have two lots to work with on your characters then you will need the help of your guildies to succeed(or do cross server exchanges, though they can potentially be risky). It's not so much that you can't get all the different resources you need, because they usually only spawn one or two ata time, however when they do spawn you will want to gather as much as you can while it's here. you could collect some resources with just your two harvies but it won't last long if your planning on doing much crafting. And if your not planning on doing that much crafting then you probably should consider working with a custom order smith instead of becoming one yourself.

Zetter,

I started working on Weaponsmith around December of 2003, and mastered it mid-January. However, I was already harvesting resources for the profession, and had been since August with an alt. It took me a good 6 months from the time I mastered WS to the point that I had a stockpile of quality resources to make 90% of my schematics that could compare with the other MWS's on the server. (It took that long for a decent spawn of Ostrine Carbonate Ore to come up, so I could make ABPHs. I still to this day do not make munitions, deciding long ago that it was going to be too much trouble.) During this time, I had an active fleet of 9 heavy mineral harvesters tied to my account (mobile, to follow the spawns, plus an assortment of heavy chems, gas, flora farms and Fusions to substitute in as needed, depending on the spawn,) plus 3 medium houses, 6 factories, 12 static BER10 medium harvesters and 6 BER9 wind harvesters that I had access to via lot-swaps with friends.

In short, it took 6 months of INTENSIVE harvesting, hunting for the best of the best resources, before I could equal the established MWS's on the server (especially due to the infrequent spawn rate of some of the most important resources that make up advanced components. I'm still stretching my stockpile of Irolunn Gas that spawned on Lowca over a year ago.) Not to take the wind out of your sails, but you are going to be very disappointed with your results if you pursue harvesting resources in the manner you are describing.

WS is almost comperable to CM resource wise, except WS gets HQ spawns from time to time.
