You started off as an Artisan, then? Start surveying with your equipment - do that while you're running missions with the cheap pistol you'll need to buy. Or go brawler and run missions. There's some money to be made running those that will allow you to upgrade your equipment and buy harvestors. Harversting the resources yourself is generally much cheaper than buying them.

Do NOT wait until you make master to start harvesting the good stuff. I recommend you mine cheap steel for your grinding, and mine the rarer resources for later. If you wait you won't be able to compete with those of us who have been collecting that kind of stuff for a long time. For what's available, go to SWGCraft.com.

Good luck!

while your at it, if you have brand new novice marksman or brawler, craft some of the weapons you can use yourself such as staffs or a D18 and use them on your missions. you'll get some usage xp out of it that'll help you along a bit. granted, it's not much, but every little bit helps when you're just starting.

(er, I thought you didn't Usage XP if you used the item in question yourself? Or did I read something wrong)

Anyway, if you are a brand new artisan, worked upEngineer towards the Elite professions, try to make the best Personal Harvester you can build (max BER4). Or, if you are in a House or have Architect friends, see about getting a Medium Harvester (at least BER8). Start collecting as much steel as possible. If you want to work up Weaponsmith by grinding barrels.

First tree I would work with, would be Techniques, IMPO. Before you do that, at least get Firearms-I, for the projectile rifle barrel. Then go back to work on the barrels for Techniques (Column 4).

You could try Heavy Warheads, but you will need serious cash, or be patient enough to grab all that gas (Skevon and H-3 something). And certain steel (Thoranium?). PITA, but much faster exp gain. I have yet to do this.

Barrels might seem like a PITA, and kill the wrist, but it is relatively simple, in regards to efficient usage of resources (just steel, one resource required).

Just be careful if you are trying to do two or more professions at the same time. Especially when both use the same resource (steel, ugh... Adv Droid Frames or Pistol barrel... hrmm... DE or WS...)

Concentrate on one or the other... Otherwise, you'll find yourself short on steel, and not fully up in either profession(s).

Huh? Did you do an experiment to prove this?

I've written down my XP, went on a mission using my own weapon, even zoned to another area or do a logoff/login afterwards...no XP gain. Sometimes, it doesn't even give me any XP when other people use my weapons. But I read somewhere that this has to do with proximity to the weapon being used.

Yes, actually I have done it and it does work. I haven't figured out how much exactly. It's not much, but it does go up. Besides, it offers a nice break from the neverending grinding process.

Kaullad,

Ok. I'll check it out about the XP.

I know what you mean about taking a break...I field test my weapons myself.

I just went out right now to kill some critters and I managed to get WS XP by using my crafted guns.

As Kaullad said, the XP gain is very small (4 or 5 WS XP per 101 Carbines or Pistols XP) AND the WS XP doesn't always get added.
