Now that I know about resource
caps
, I was wondering if it is wise to always use advanced components when making ranged weapons. I seem to have good quality resources and whilst my melee weapons are all very good (if not hitting the damage cap, they are very close to it), I was wondering why my ranged weapons are always way off the mark.

I have always made the best advanced ranged components I could (I use foomans tool) yet my guns are horrible. Is it wise to replace these with non-advanced components, and if so, which components should I not be using advanced versions of?

It's difficult.

I think it depends on how close your resources are to the caps, and what components you are making. ABPHs for instance are a no-brainer. The min damage on mine are at the same or higher than the max damage of my basic parts, so the effect on the final damage is huge. As for barrels? I use advanced ones, but the difference is tiny, maybe 3-3 damage.

I use basic scopes, experimented down to as close to 0 HAM as possible, gives +11 range for no cost.

Advanced stocks are a complete lottery, but on the right gun make a good difference.

My advice? Try them with and without advanced items. Experiment until you get to the best you can get with each one and then stick the end results next to each other and compare them. Then you can see just how _your_ components effect what you make.

Then go and look at other good ws vendors on your server and see how you stack up against them. Once you can see how you are placed in the heirarchy you can decide what is best for you _right now_.

Of course a resource spawn tomorrow could change all that

The general rule is advanced is better.

The few exceptions include scopes and Blaster rifle barrels. On scopes, I take your basic scope and experiment efficnency until the hams are zero and I have +10 to ideal. Extra accuracy at no cost, great. The advanced scope has higher hams, but also much better accuracy mods.

On the ABRB, MY basic is better than the advanced, DPS-wise. It's 2 min/max less and .1 faster. Every calculation I make says that .1 second always pays off better dividends unless you're dealing with a Master rifle with tapes who fires HS3 at the cap in anything under 7.6

My advice is to try making a couple basics and compare to the stats of your advanced. Then go from there.

Even Advanced scopes and stocks can be better if you get lucky on the resource spawns. On Valcyn, we had a nice 993 OQ Chromium Alum spawn which allows me to make 0 HAM Advanced scopes with +19 range mods.

I also stumbled across a something that I can't explain on my Advanced weapon stocks. Using the standard 6-point-at-once experiement methodology using my best SR Corellian Decid. wood (688 SR), I was getting 40/40 Min/Max dmg, and +.275 speed with +29 HAMs. Using a Corellian Dec. Wood with LOWER SR (580ish as I recall) I was able to get 40/40, +.175 spd, and +27 HAMs. This wasn't just a lucky schema either, I duplicated it a second time exactly.

The only explanationI can identifyis the fact the second (580ish SR)Decid. wood has a much higher Malleability than the 688 SR stuff did. Pure speculation on my part for this though. Needless to say, once I discovered this, I harvested 400K of this wood
