I'm finding lately that the major wep enhancers i.e. krayt tissue/acklay bones/lootable schems are just too darn expensive for it to be worth my while chasing them down!
I mean....people will either go hunt forthem themselves or just buy the loot and get a WS to make them.
I feel the days of my premium vendor are numbered.
Prior to writing this post I briefly saw how a guy paid 10 million creds for some +60 krayt tissues in another thread. I mean.....he could have just asked a WS what he had in stock and paid much less.....but....these days everybody and their aunt is a multi-millionaire.....so...I kind of understand. I probably would pay those prices if I knew I was gonna sell my next drop of base Acklay bones for 1 million each.
I'm tempted to bump up the price of my custom orders if players supply loot....but that will only lead them to go elsewhere.
The loot is the commodity now.......not the weapon.
Might as well drop WS and just do a healthy trade in powerups.....as those seem to be my main sales these days.

Exchange loot for resources and powerups for resources andyouare an architect
Well maybe not, but the comparison seemed funny when i thought of it

Yeah.....I have about 4.5 mil and I cannot afford many of the high end loot. I have many many pieces of krayt and I think I am going to stop making premium weapons all together. It is too hard to find a buyer and the payback I get is minimal.

I have never bought a loot drop weapon enhancement. The prices has always been entirely too high. I make loot drop weapons for people all the time when they bring thier stuff to me, and I charge a nbominal fee. I see smiths on my server get into bidding wars all the time for stuff like krayt tissue, the majority of the time, by the time its all done and over they are lucky to break even.
I am not going to pay someone millions of credits for basically doing the same action that would result in them looting 25 hides off a mob.

I make Scythes, but that is about it.
Loot is far too expensive. When will looters realise that the prices they charge only get passsed straight back to them when they buy their enhanced weapons.

Really, I must admit I don't have this problem, as i've been running a Rare and Exotic Weapons Vendor as i like to call it for some time now. And more often than not, this is where much of my money comes from, granted, there are things on here that don't move quickly, but eventually it seems someone stumbles by and wants them. Also, weapons like the scyth and DRX-6B are great for this sortof thing, buy the Dr schm for 50-75k, get some guildies to give you there "junk" white cubes, make 5 rifles and sell em for 200k each.
Well i guess the point to what i'm saying is that while its difficult to have one of these vendors, i find that if you play your cards right, it usually pays off in the end.

It's hard to classify this as a widespread problem, but I have been noticing a lot more examples of it lately. The prices on Acklay bones in particular have gotten pretty outrageous. However, a lot of the insane prices you see come from where? The trade forums. While a noble idea, the trade forums are pretty much a cess pool full of people who have no idea how to run an auction. So you have to take the "data" you acquire there in regards to loot prices with a grain of salt.
It's far better to hunt your own loot, or develop contacts of people who will sell it to you at a reasonable price (and yes, such people still exist).

I noticed this trend a long time ago. I was tired of getting outbid by my customers on smithing components who then came and asked for custom stuff. For custom weapons, I started only accepting additional loot drop components as compensation - this at least ensured that I could make my own high profit items for the trouble of doing a low profit custom order.

Relying on your guildies generousity to make credits is not good advice to your average weaponsmith though. Thats not a good sustainable business model if you will.

I, too, shifted to this model some time ago. I will only entertain custom work requests if I'm getting some form of WS loot -- not credits -- in the deal. It's worked out rather well. You'd be surprised how many people will throw an extra Acklay bone or Krayt tissue your way in exchange for your time, expertise, and the use of those skill tapes you probably spent a ridiculous amount of credits obtaining. =)

Well, its more of a few good guildie friends who've i've helped out quite a bit in return, such as tracking down, and putting together a DE-10 for one of em, so i don't want it to sound like i'm exploiting them, I'm just lucky that were a bunch of good guys, and help each other out such that this is possible.

Well...I'm in a special little market. I'm the only weaponsmith in my town, and most of my townsfolk and fellow guildies buy their basics from me. Who knows where they get their special weapons from? I do make about a scythe a week and an occasional DXR-6b disrupter rifle, but I focus on the basics for most of my income. (Laser rifles, laser carbines, VK's, Power Hammers, curved swords, and DX2 pistols for the most part. I have been weaponsmithing for about 10 months now and I have about 4 million in the bank. If I were stingy and didn't donate money to my town and didn't give newbies free weapons, then I might have another 1 to 1.5 mil. My primary motivation in being a weaponsmith was to provide myself and my friends with good weapons at reasonable prices. Those super weapons are never reasonably priced....and are getting quite out of hand.
