I've got a few grenade assembly and experimentation tapes. Now that grenades are getting popular I'm gonna start using them. Why are they different from regular weapon tapes? Why not have melee and firearm tapes? I don't get it.

They're leftovers from beta days when commandos used to craft grenades. At the time, they had grenade exp. and assembly skills, so these tapes would have made sense. When grenades were moved into the WS munitions tree, the skills were never taken out of the back-end cache from which the loot tables pull random stats for skilltapes. So, yeah....they don't do anything.
