So after two years of playing a combat role, I have decided to create a Weaponsmith. I'm really excited about the possibilities but I do have a few questions. I have poured over the stickies for hours, visited swgcraft.com, studied schematics endlessly. I think I have a good grasp (at least conceptually) about what I want to accomplish as a weaponsmith and how to go about it. What do have a question on is resources strategy. Last night was my first night going out and actually placing some harvesters and it was at that point that I realized that I have no idea what I'm doing. Sure I was able to surveya good spot with high density but I have no idea if I'm harvesting the "right" things. So that's where I need some advice.
- What are your harvesting strategies?
- As I'm focusing on creating ranged weapons, what should I be looking for (I know that it's going to vary based on components but I know that CD, OQ, HR, UT, HR and SR are all things to look at, some together some independently)?
- What do you harvest when there does not seem to be the resources around that you want?
- Is it even worth it to harvest anything >900 (other than to sell for grinding)?
- Actually what "cut-off" should I be looking at for resources? 900? 950?
After being in game for 2 years, I know that a lot of players want to jump right into a profession without really having any idea of what the profession is about (we are going through that now in Bounty Hunter). I don't want to be that player. I want to be a weaponsmith that can contribute to the craft and to the adventure seekers on my server. So any tips would be well welcome!

First of all welcome to the Weaponsmith Professtion
Now to hopefully cover off any harvesting questions you may have...
I used to be an armorsmith myself back in the beginning of SWG, so I got into the rescources game a little earlier, but the same concept applies. When I decided to go Weaponsmith, I ended up spending quite a bit of time, going through rescource lists here on the forums as well as SWG Craft mainly to get a list of the 5 to 10 best specific rescources on Kauri for each of the crafted items. It takes a bit of time to do, but is a lifesaver when you're doing vendor searches. You can keep the list handy in your in-game Notepad (/note)
There are rescources which you have to be extra vigilent about, I would assume that this is the same for every galaxy, but it sure is true for Kauri, Irolunn Gas, Skevon Gas, Polymer, Neutronium Steel, Polysteel Copper, Link-Steel Aluminum to mention a few, These rescources seem to spawn very rarely, and once they are available you have to jump on them quick, especially if the spawn is the best there is...
First thing I would suggest you take a look is the SWG Craft forums, and in the Weaponsmith section you'll find a post about Rescource Caps. It's a must, you have to know that not all rescources stats cap @ 1000.
I would first try and gather all of the subcomponent rescources, make sure those are good, bad subs make a huge impact on the final combine. Then go for the specific requirements for individual weapons.
If there is nothing around that I cant seem to use for Weaponsmith, I typically harvest Ore. Any type, just as long as the spawn has a decent yield. Ore sells in big quantities. Unless there is a rescource spawn that is exceptional, which you cant afford to loose...
I hope this answers some of your questions in regards harvesting, if you have any specific questions you can post here, I'm sure everyone will help...
Best of luck with Weaponsmith...
