Thread: Am I too Jaded?

I have an honest question. It basically is if you think this interchange I had with a player tonight.

I got a tell today: "I'm looking for a NASTY dx2, are you the WS to make it for me?"

Having gotten alot of similar requests(as originally this one was worded), i said that I probably wasnt the WS for him.

He went on to question what type of WS doesn;t make good pistols, and that maybe he should see an image designer for what he needed.

at that point, I got condescending, and explained that most people who make requests like him have unreachable standards for what they want(I find this true), and i usually choose not to help them. And that mosr smiths on the server use the same materials, so results will be similar no mater who e goes to. And that he should go find another smith to help him.

I admit i was condescending, but i wasnt untill he pursued it. So I ask you, the community if i was in the wrong.

In the wrong? Eh that's a fairly grey area actually some people will say you were rude/sarcastic to the customer... and you were at least part of that... but it was certainly an understandable reaction. I can't be the only person to get a steady stream of 'I want a (badass, uber, bitchin', godly, monster) weapon' tells through the day. Eventually you get tired of explaining that your stats are pretty much the same as the other top X weaponsmiths, with 1-2% variance on certain weapons depending on the experimentation etc.

It's another one of those 'impossible' requests, like a Laser Carbine with the max and min damage really close together, or a krayted VK, etc. It can certainly drag on a body after awhile.

ya i had a guy tell me he wouldnt buy a laser carb if the minimum wasnt 125.

My favorite is the guy who sent me a tell, and special ordered a crate of c22's. I quoted him a price, and he agreed. So i made them. When he came to pick them up, he informed me that they sucked, and he got better ones, cheaper. ANd the imediately said, "SO, can you make me a crate of thermal detonators?"

Anyway, I have removed my Master WS tag, as I have enough of a customer base now. Hopefully that will help

the thing is, i've found a good niche as a wholesaler. I do 90% of my business in sales of crates, more than 90% probably.

So all my time is spent churning out crates for single cutomers. I have 3 master merchants i support, and one guy who is just rich,and is having me do a special project for him. So a sale or two randomly doesnt really matter to me.

Figure out the words used in Shyriiwook that equate to "My apologies, but I have an IQ requirement for my clientele. Please take your business elsewhere." Copy the textinto the aforementioned /retell macro. Then when you respond, you'll confuse the poor buggers even worse when they see wookie words and can't figure out why it's not translating when they should know the language.

Not everyone sells uber stuff on the server trade forums, I've noticed. So put your tag back up, they'll see it in examine anyway. You won't get offers of looted enhancements from lazy powerplayers w/o a tag up.

If idiots are plaguing you, make a couple dumb answer macros and put em intoolbar 5 or somewhere notnormally used. Here are some of mine:

macro1 spatial: %TT, I can't, no resources; /frown self;

macro2 retell: /retell Pleasevisit my vendor(xxxx, -xxxx);

macro3 reply: /reply Send me an email, I'll make it tomorrow;

I use 3 alot, cuz I'm a procrastinator. I can't assume credit for it, as I copied it from a weaponsmith I was plagueing when I wasn't a smith.These are only one button and they're easier than typoing the iggy command. But macro1 usually leads to the surveyor types offering me resources, so I sometimes refraim from using it, or saying anything. Dumb looks don't hurt anyone.

My personal peev is theguys who use "?" over and over.That annoys the hell out of me.

Some I've recently started using.. /replyI'm busy, find another weaponsmith, "Eeechuta!";/curse;

DO NOT apologize to these furrbags! It makes it hard for the others toget rid of them.

Thnx, Oar

No, you're not jaded..Hell no! I have been a master WS for about a month now, and I can't even ride my speedere through an empty field without having some noob ask me "Can you make me a good gun?"

My usual reply is.."What do you consider good?" Because as some of te posts have alread stated, the resources on each server are about the same. So, if you have the same resources as everyone else your Weapons are no 'better' or 'worse'.

This brings into play the ever present idiot who has never crafted so much as a pair of casual shoes, and who compares every weapon on the vendors to that one he got six months (when spawns may have been better) and who wont buy your stuff because your Laser Carbine has 10 pts lower max damage than he bought way back when.

Nevermind the noob who doesn't know a thing about slicing and demands that you make him a Republic Blaster that has a max damage of 250, just because a friend of a friend of a friend told him they have one. Or the guy who wants a Rocket launcher with a base speed of 3.2 unsliced. Good Luck.

My other favorite is the guy who sends me tells after going to my vendor and asking me if I could make him a "more powerful whatever"..Listen dude, if I had a more powerful weapon I would have it on the vendor, now wouldn't I?

And finally my last rant and foavorite story...An Armorsmith friend of mine sent me an email complaining that he saw a vendor called ---Corp that was selling Laser Rifles that had 10 more max damage than mine for 9K apiece. He went further to tell me that I should scout those other vendors and adjust my prices to be competitive....First off, I don't even try to be competitive with some uber mining, mass producing, in-game conglomerate who can afford to sell rifles for cheap just because he pays for a second account to use as a lot mule. Also, it's not about making money for me, its about pride. How much pride can you have in your profession if you make one weapon, stick it into a factory and then go off to chase holos?

All of my clients get custom built handcrafted weapons...It was with this that I had to send a reply that while I was reading his email, I sold 3 FWG5s for 20K each, 2 laser carbines for 30K eachand a set of VKs for 10K from my vendor...

My point is this...Don't worry about being crass. The majority of noobs don't know anything about crafting and if you have a faithful client base, you don't need to be nice to everyone. Wear your Tag with pride because you earned it. If someone doesnt want to spend their credits with you, no sweat..They will come back once they realize that there is no uber cheap, uber deal out there.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest! Woo
