I have read that it is buggy and that items placed there might go poof under certain circumstances. I suppose you could put some crap you dont care about in it and play for a few days and see what happens.

There is no input hopper on craft tools, what your seeing is the input hopper on the craft station. When you open a craft tool next to a station, thats how you access the stations resources for the craft process. All resources in the station still add to a structures item count.
