Thread: the double-slicing exploit
Recently, a weaponsmith on my server was "cleaned-out" by a master smuggler, who few days later started advertising and selling double-sliced weapons(it was so blatantly obvious - the original stats were in the weapon names). That smuggler promptly got banned. He was caught only because he was extremely stupid about it. But the exploit is still around and theweapons don't have to be sold or traded for it to be game-breaking,. Now I'm getting some customers who are cleaning me out. Should I be suspicious that the exploit is being used?
Well, if they are cleaning you out, thats not so bad. I wouldnt mind coming online, and finding that i sold the 600k worth of weapons on my vendor.
Does it affect us as a profession? not really.
Does it affect the devs and game ballance? Ya
I for one don't like finding my vendors cleaned out. As an established weaponsmith on my server with plenty of cash, I take more pride in having a stocked storefront with weapons made with the best resources than in my bank account. I also don't need my best, rarest resources squeezed to the point where I have to face either selling lower-quality weapons or just quitting.
Double-slicing also marginalizes weaponsmiths and their wares. What's the point of months of work surveying and harvesting resources when even an overnight smuggler can do far more to a weapon than you can?
Smuggler from Kauri here... that exploit, according to everyone I know, has been fixed. They banned enough accounts that a number of smugglers have stopped slicing altogether. People who were banned were not even big offenders, one of them admitted he did it on purpose on 6 weapons - all of which he kept. He and his co-conspiritor were banned. If someone did buy them all to do this (if they found a way to double slice again) don't worry, they won't be around long. He may just be buying your weapons to stock up for his guild or to slice (once) and resell the very best ones.

If you have a lot of money and don't want to get cleaned out all the time, whynot just restrict yourself to custom orders or raise your prices? This will allow the lower end weaponsmiths to get their share of the profits and give you a chance to provide only the best custom weapons available to those that can afford your service.
Yo Marlan,
There's also been a lot of player base attacks lately withgroups of 30 or more. I don't know how often this happens on our server but I can imagine there would be rushes of purchases, especially if in a large group someone says, "Hey where can I get weapons?" "Go see Marlan!"

This was a terrible bug. It has been fixed. It dramatically affected gameplay in PvP. We are commonly seeing 2.x speed flamethrowers now everywhere.
Just another one to add to the long list of critical 'game breaking' bugs that didnt get caught soon enough and caused a lot of damage to the community.

Why? unless you know an exploit is being used, then there is not much to do on that end.
Being cleaned out a problem? maybe your prices are to low.
Raise your prices ... or put more on your vendor. I used to stock 5 of each weapon ... then started doing 10 of each weapon ... I am now up to stocking 15-25 of each weapon on my vendors to make sure I stay stocked.
I also contact anybody that buys more then 10 weapons at a time and offer to sell them crates for their convience :-)
Now if your a crafter that wants to sell small amounts to a lot of folks instead of large amounts to a small number of folks, then stock the lower end guns. I can't remember the last time some smuggler cleared me out of dl44's or scouts to slice.
I dont agree. For years the Corvette was the #1 stolen car in the U.S. yet that didnt seem to hurt their reputation. If anything it shows who's gear was chosen as top of the line. Even though a double or even triple slice on anyones weapons would put it over the top of conceivably possible, they are still going to want to start with the best base stats they can easily get ahold of. Be proud that 9 out of 10 criminals chose your weapons as the best weapons to pull off their heist. Afterall, being a criminal doesnt cloud their sense of taste. If I pull off a million dollar heist and celebrate by drinking only the best Cognac at $3000 a bottle, would this somehow speak ill of the maker?

I think the biggest problem of this is having your name on a weapon that has been exploited. You had nothing to do with it in reality but your name is still on an exploited weapon. These weapons circulate around with your name on it and you get connected to exploited weapons. This is nothing that can get you banned but will tarnish ones reputation.
If a smuggler is exploiting and double slicing a weapon, they will not hurt your business. They still have to get the weapon from somewhere. If they're buying yours, then how are you losing business.
What will hurt business is if they become weaponsmiths and smugglers then make the weapons that they exploit on.
As long as they are charging more money for their exploited weapons, people will still come to you and buy the non-exploited weapons because they are cheaper.
It might affect some people, but as far as business goes, I wouldn't worry about it. What is more worring though is PvP balance from these exploited weapons.
