Thread: JtL Indications of bad news for existing crafting classes

Just reading the Gamespot interview on Jump to Lightspeed, found the following:

GAMESPOT: How exactly will players prepare for battle? We know that the expansion will introduce a new shipwright crafter class--will this class also be crafting mounted weapons, shields, and other additions for ships, or will players get improvements for their ships by other means?

CINCO BARNES (Lead Designer, SOE): Before launching, you will probably want to outfit your ship with high-quality components in all categories. Of course, the most important combat parts will be your weapons, shields, and armor. Player shipwrights will build ship pieces and put them up for sale just as Galaxies' crafting professionals do today.

However, there is also a significant loot component to Jump to Lightspeed. Starfighter pilots will find a good number of exotic ship parts while flying missions or through general exploration (of dangerous areas). These looted parts can be used right away, or you can collect them for shipwrights to "reverse-engineer" into special high-performance components.

Source: Gamespot interview.

Sounds like it's going to be the shipwrights that craft all spaceship components, no indication here that weaponsmiths (or any other existing profession) will have any input.

[Which would suck, IMHO!]

Like the idea of shipwrights 'reverse-engineering' looted components for inclusion in a player ship, though... will be interesting to see how this works. Hope it's more complex that just adding a looted rancor tooth to a sword core!

Well, i would like to see JTL first before i start arguing.
To be honest in this post it doesn't say who makes it.

But I agree, other classes should have an input too.

PS: I heard droids will also be needed and they are made by a DE

you'd think that the weaponsmith would be required for either weapon systems or actual weapons.

(do we get to make torpedo's... )

I just want to know if JtL will give a use for the heavy warhead.

Why do we have that schem?

That interview doesn't give enough information to say either way. I'm betting most of the crafting professions will provide sub-components to Shipwrights, similar to how the professions are tied together now. And that's not something I'd expect them to mention in a short interview response.

I do hope so - I'd like a Shipwright to build a ship using a hull (might require Architect input), armour (AS), weapons modules (WS) and engines (no reliance on others) etc. The SW class could end up being the most dependent on other professions, and consequently the most interactive. Could be a great profession!

Wonder if you'll need JtL to be a SW? Or if the capability will be added into regular SWG like other profession updates (e.g. politician, jedi)?

Why do we need to supply parts to shipwrights? So that people can come to this forums and complain about being "ship component monkeys"? That'd fit so nicely alongside "factory monkeys" and"loot combining monkeys".

this would lead me to believe that only shipwrights will be crafting all ship related components.. including weapons &armor. but again they won't tell us for sure. don't want to tick off the existing player base by tipping your hand before they buy the space expansion. (man for as much as i enjoy playing this game, i sure get hostile with it sometimes)

if i'm not included in the expansion I'm dumping weaponsmith and grinding up shipwright. we all make the same weapons with the same stats anyways... the only enjoyment i gain out of crafting weapons these days are making the rare, loot dropped limited schematic guns. any monkey can mass produce t-21s and stun batons. so i'll be a ship building monkey next!
