Not sure how possible this could be, but how about adding a really hard to get optional component to master weapon smiths that needed a collectable ingredient that would allow for master weapon smiths to craft weapons that had different kinds of damage. like this:

Ranged Crystalline Power Core:

Housing: some amount of metal, (conductive based)
Crystalline base: Simi-rare crystalline gemstone
Catalyst: Radioactive (OC based)
Elemental binding ring: a rare drop assembled component, like the new junk dealers bags. (you would get from npc weapon smith trainers and tradable only once fully collected.)

Melee Weapons Core:

Housing: some amount of metal (shock resist based)
Crystalline base: Simi-rare crystalline gemstone
Catalyst: Radioactive (OC based)
Elemental binding ring: a rare drop assembled component, like the new junk dealers bags. (you would get from npc weapon smith trainers and tradable only once fully collected.)

The point of the elemental binding rings is that fighter classes can go to npc trainers, get raw rings of what damage they are looking for. Say a raw ring of heat. This ring would then need 5 dropped loots from different worlds that the fighter would go out and try to get. Say a claw from some creature (looted, not harvested by scouts), or the horns of something else. Then place in the bag, if its what is needed, it would go in, if not, it would say this item does not fit in this ring. Make it a Easter egg hunt to fill the rings, after all, the power to set what damage your weapon uses should be hard (yes, I know everyone would want to do stun, so it should be REALLY hard, as in loot from rare spawns and nasty mobs). Once the ring is filled, it can be combined to form a completed Ring of Elemental binding (type, IE stun). This ring is where the weapon smiths come in. its tradable and can be sold open market for those that wish to pay the player for the hunting time spent, or tradable to the weapon smith that uses it to make the core (the core should have a 100% chance of creation, the loss of a ring would REALLY upset the customers). Then the core could be used to make the weapons.

This would allow some classes that have type of damage limits removed if they wish to spend the time tracking down and killing mobs to get there goodies. All the hunting classes would have new reasons to go out and kill odd creatures instead of flooding Dantooine's mission terminals, and it would add a whole line of new weapons that have been crafted by a master.

You should also try to make lower end versions, like power ups that do dots of different kinds of damage based off of easier to get loot for novice weapon smiths to make. Like Elemental Focal Kits, still collection based (can't make it too easy, and let the lower level players have some fun too), creatable as 100 charge DOT's that do damage based off of the type of kit.

Well, like I said, not to sure if its possible, but sure would bring some fun into a lot of classes life.

My 2 cents

as an ex TKM can I just say:

/agree

the mechanics can be worked out, but to be able to make VKs with alternate damage types (no matter how hard it is to get the bits) would be super...

I'd kinda like to discourage there being any more loot components in the game...I'd prefer something that we as WS's can get on our own without uber-fighting skills.

I like the idea and want to see something along these lines implimented, but I'm kind of weary of more rare loot drops. Also giving that kind of control seems a bit too much to ask for. A compromise, in my opinion, would be specialized PUPS. Made from standard materials (you could have the schems be loot drops if you want, just as long as they are learnable and not limited use) and would be applied like normal PUPs with uses and all. There could be a schem for each type of damage, excluding lightsabre of course. I believe that this solves a problem a lot of weaponsmiths and fighters have with their weapons and provides another money sink for the economy plus a renewable source of income for weaponsmiths.
