Currently I think this aspect weapon constructing sucks. It is non-intuitive, and rarely does it offers any real choices.
Take power handles, no reason to experiment on anything other then damage, as that gives the 3 most imported stats min dam, max dam, and speed. Even with components like barrels, few fighters would wand to exchange the damage and sped, with the added accuracy this component can provide.
The devs "complained" that to many crafters ate making basically the same weapons, back at the temporary changes in experimentations. Well I do not se for us not to.
No matter what the only thing that maters for combaters are the damage the weapon inflicts over time when spamming specials, especially wit the power of buffs now a days.

We should be able to maker more kind of components. Not a simple normal/advanced versions, but versions that have different properties, Even if these properties are only different lines of experimentation.

From what I understand of armour smiths, that also have normal and advanced armour segments, but thoughts armour segments have layers. That means that a armour made for PvP is different for a fighting NPC's one or one for fighting animals.
Droid engineers also have some of this, the modules they place in to a droid determines what it can be used for.

Why was we weaponsmith never given that? The ability to make the same "shell" of a weapon soothed for different kind of tasks, and more over letting the materials we have determine what tasks we can make our weapons perform.
Then we would se different weaponsmith making different weapons. Then one-weaponsmith weapons would not be roughly the same as the next ones. Then Weaponsmithing cold be an true art.
