Regardless of your playstyle, you should start by mining a LOT of steel. If you want to powergrind to Master, mine about 400k. If you just want to get to the point where you can make stuff that people might buy, you'll only need about 100k to get to that point.
Grind projectile pistol barrels until you can get Firearms 1. Then grind projectile rifle barrels. Climb the Techniques tree first thing - this will give you the "Expert" title and a total of seven experimentation points. Yay!
From here, you can actually make a living as a weaponsmith if you work at it. C12 frag grenades sell pretty well and you get the schematic for them at Novice; with your seven Expert experimentation points and reasonable materials (you'll need more than steel now... polymer, reactive gas, gemstone...) you can make fairly worthwhile grenades.
If you just want to grind, keep grinding rifle barrels until you hit Master.
I recommend keeping an eye out for resources, regardless. There are other threads describing what resources are useful, but the best thing, really, is to review your draft schematics every now and then and observe what rare resources they require, and what attributes tend to be useful for different kinds of resources (e.g. if you want to make melee weapons, you'll be needing a lot of metal with high SR/UT (probably steel), whereas if you like firearms, you should pick up metal with high CD/OQ (probably copper).
And set up a vendor. It's really bloody hard to sell anything without one.
G'luck!
it will be boring making the same thing over and over for a while, but you wont be able to sell anything with no experimentation points.
and
start stockpiling the good resources, you will be thankful by the time you reach master. only use crppy stuff while you grind to the top
