Actually, since you get 2xp per resource used the amount of resources *does* matter.
If you're purely interested in grinding, go with Heavy Warhead (xx2x). It gets you 735xp per Practise.
If you look through other weaponry, you'll see that quite a few are easy to make (ie don't take the specific named resources of the Heavy Warhead) and grant you lots too:
the Light Lightening Cannon grants about 500 a pop.
Me, I recommend doing the Crafting quests. Making 8 complete guns, from scratch, will generate a decent amount of xp. It'll also give you a discrete 'goal' as opposed to 'xp', and be fundamentally more rewarding.

WOW someone who advocates contractor missions
Noone ever uses them but they are really great!
They make the whole process of grinding quicker, cheaper and much, much more fun!

The good ol' blaster-rifle barrels at x1xx, resource to xp ratio isn't bad and is much cheaper on resources than warheads.
The quests probably help as well.

I totally agree.
Ok, I was Master when these came out, but I gave a couple a go just to get a feel for them. I'm hoping (I don't know) that there are SW missions. Because I'm NOT going to grin chassis (booooooooring).
The contractor missions are essentially how I made Master WS over several months. I'd sit down, and decide "ok, I'm going to go hunting. I need 20 stacks of decent C12s for this." With only a couple boxes in Marksman, a C12 is freaking HUGE.
Plus, making "decent C12s" at xxx2-xxx4 means you end up Practicing about 40+ items, and gain a HELL of a lot of XP. And then gain UXP for using the grenades.
Having a 'goal' other than 'xp accrual' will keep you sane. Hell, you may actually *enjoy* the grind. I know I did.

The resource to xp ratio is 1 to 2, same as with every other WS item.
It'll just drive you nuts, is all...

The Rifle Barrels arent bad, set your craft macro going, position the cursor over the spot, take the ball out of the mouse and sit watching tv constantly clicking

For my grind to Master Weapon Smith, I set up 11 macros, 11 tool kits, and made "Metal Staff" Takes 42 of any metal type resource, I choose Copper, I had like 800k of it, Ended up using around 430k to master WS out, Took 1 minute per 1k of WS exp I just ground up one tree and ground out 120k exp and sold it off, took 2 hours per max IT flew along and only used some crap copper i had laying around,
I tweeked my Macros to run at 5seconds per craft, so this chart is alittle slower,
This is what it looked like
at 880xp in 64seconds
35k took 43mins
49k took 60mins
63k took 1:16
77k took 1:33
4:34 per Tree
18:15 for MWS
Total resources used 106910 per tree
427640 for MWS
2.09523809524XP per resoruce
now this was a slow macro as it took 6 seconds per craft/combin on Naboo
I flew over to Endor "no player citys" and i got my macro down to 5 seconds a combin, worked out to 1056xp a min
I could only click so much a day so i would do 120k-240k beforeI stoped but it went really fast
For me this worked well Because i had 800k+ copper to blow on this as I didn't really have the all the items around for War heads Plus Keeping my mouse in the same spot and only have to click was faster then moving around and choosing the other reasouces
