Thread: How I wish Weaponsmith actually was

First off let me start by saying that this is just how I wish it was... not how it was... or that they would even come close to considering implimenting this ideal... it's simply how I wish it was developed in the first place.

Real life weapons are made from various parts. Those parts gradually wear out and can be individually replaced. Also when you come across a new part that is better then one of your old parts or just more suited for your tastes, you can remove the old part and replace it with a new one.

So lets use a simple DH17 as an example of... What if...

A weaponsmith builds the main body for a DH17.

A standard power handler is built and attached.

Then a barrel is built and attached to it.

A trigger assembly is built and attached.

A stock is built and attached

A scope is attached.

The weapon is then handed over and the player takes it out and has a good time shooting stuff up.

A while later the player then comes across another weaponsmith who specializes in advanced scopes. The player realizes that his current scope isn't all that nice and has taken quite a bit of damage over time. He hands the weapon over to the weaponsmith. The weaponsmith removes the old standard scope and replaces it with a new Advanced scope. The weapons is handed back to the player.

Now the gun seems more accurate then before, but isn't doing as much damage as the player would like, and besides, his power handler is getting a bit toasted from using overcharged shot one too many times. So he goes off to another weaponsmith who specializes in building the galaxies best power handlers. So he removes the old burnt out power handler and replaces it with a brand new advanced one.

I think you get the idea...

More or less each individual part on the gun degrades based on the use of the weapon. The body of the gun decays based mostly on the condition of it's individual parts. Such as if you completely burn out a power handler, you would do more damage to the main body of your gun. But, the weapon could be disassembled and the body could be replaced. Also, a particular part could be removed from one gun and placed on another if you wished.

I know it's just a pipe dream... but wouldn't it be cool if your gun was something you carried with you for a long time... came to know and love? Took care of and made sure it was well maintained instead of our current "disposable" weapons?

Just a dream I've been thinking about I thought I would share.

This would be very cool, and would allow for a much greater degree of variation and customizationin weapons. It would also make weaponsmithing a little more interesting.

It could be very cool to get a weapon frame from Bhodi (just using WS names from my server), a barrel from Tiq, a scope from me, and a power-handler from Icarii to make the ultimate weapon. At the same time, each weaponsmith could still make complete weapons for those players that weren't interested in customizing their weapons to such a degree. Likewise, it would be easy to upgrade a weapon to a krayt handler, and reduce the risk of bad experiments (you'd only have to worry about one critical failure instead of two).

Unfortunately, you are rightthat this will never be implemented. I think there would also be a good deal of internal resistance from other Weaponsmiths who might not want their income streams disrupted from selling lots of disposable weapons.

Ive kicked similar thoughts around for a while, I think that woud be absolutly awesome. You see snipers and such with a rifle they work on, modify and spend time with like they would a best friend.. not use iit till it breaks only to get another one..

*Points at powerups*

There ya go! They degrade after 100 uses, they are "better" than what you normally have, and there is one for every part of your weapon! Stock, scope, barrel, etc

I like this idea. The problem I see and the reason why I don't want to be a weaponsmith is this: In real life what always factors in when buying something...the fact that you could afford it! People hold back on buying the exotic high priced stuff because it's plainly out of their price range. Credits in this game are so easy to come by. The thing I'm getting at is this. A weaponsmith cannot sell middle class weapons. Everyone I know in game either buys the best there is or moves on to the next vendor. If a weaponsmith does not make the same exact spec weapon or one better he will go out of business. So, every weaponsmith will load each weapon with the best components or not sell anything. If there was only a way that each weaponsmith could have some sort of unique way to make a weapon better other than the materials in shift (which all weaponsmiths have access too). Rare loot stuff is a start but...who knows. Your idea is very inventive and a start.

Unfortunately, this would not be a boost to Weaponsmiths. It would be helpful to budget-wise customers, but ultimately, we would get fewer sales.

We would no longer sell primarily weapons, we would sell parts. Instead of a customer paying full price for a stocked Laser Rifle and a non-stocked Laser Rifle, he could just buy one gun and an extra stock. And then instead of being on his merry way, he sends us a tell asking to add the stock. We would make less money and be pestered more often for inane requests like, "can u plz put this on my gun it adds +1 extra range plz come back plz".

I'm all about good customer service, but I can't say Iwant to encouragemoreplayer-dependenceon Weaponsmiths. I really don't want to have Joebob scream at me for half an hour because I didn't have five minutes free to put an item that makes a negligable difference on his gun.

As for the making more or less money... I don't really care one way or the other about that personally. For me it would just be more fun to build weapons that make sense to me, and that coule be modified like real guns can.

As for the powerups comment. Sure I suppose powerups are similar to what I'm talking about but they don't fit the bill. You can only have one powerup installed on a gun at a time and besides that, with fast guns, a powerup only lasts a matter of minutes. I'm speaking of a more fundamental change to how guns are made and used.

I appreciate the support I've seen on this idea. I think it would be more fun. And honestly, I think most real life gun stores sell more accessories and upgrades and modification parts then guns any day of the week. So really it seems to fit that aspect of things. Melee weapons are a whole different story though. Not as many parts to be changed on those, but that could be "fixed" too.

I don't see how this is fun for a weapon smith.

Spend 3 months being one then you'll see how this is such a bad idea.

That includes digging up all the resources you'll need, answering endless chat requests, and listening to people nag about pricing.

BTW how do you address a weapon that's been sliced? Unslice it? or ones with enhancements? Would the enhancemnt be on just one of the pieces? If so does it wear out too? So if not that means you can keep switching the enhanced part out. Ahh I know only put it in when you need it. that way it will last almost forever and you will never have to replace it.

What about if weaponsmiths(and Armoursmiths) Had a vendor type robot where players could leave an item and collect a few days later when it was upgraded

1. I think this would be fun for MY weaponsmithing because it would feel more like weaponsmithing rather then just building disposable guns... It would also allow for weaponsmiths to specialize more in particular areas... so if I only wanted to specialize in power handlers and scopes... I could and would still have business doing so.

2. I started my grind towards weaponsmith on day one... it took me a little while, maybe a month back then? So that means I've been a master weaponsmith for roughly 5-6 months.. (open mouth... insert foot) ... Just because you don't agree with me doesn't mean I should think as you do.

3. I think it would enhance slicing. So instead of just slicing an entire gun, you could just slice the power handler. Smugglers would have an option to select which part on the gun they were going to slice. This would also allow you do to reverse a weapon's slicing (take the sliced part off and replace it with an unsliced part)... which would be very useful considering the new "Crackdown" for those folks who don't wish to be caught with a sliced weapon.

4. As for enhanced parts... say you have a krayt enhanced power handler in a DH17... this power handler is more powerful then the original specs for the barrel could handle for example... so to me it would make sense that the barrel would decay at an increased rate due to the fact that you're pumping way more power through it then it was designed to handle.

Lastly... this is all just an idea... we all know they're not going to impliment this stuff... but it's an interesting concept I think... so have fun with it and let your imagination run wild with the possibilites

Someone else I was talking to came up with an idea to make player based "missions" on a similar note. The idea is that the player places their weapon in a "mission terminal" of some kind and posts a "reward" for the mission. Then a player comes along and picks up the mission. The game then gives that player a non equipable "copy" of the original weapon. That player can then fix the "copy" and if it's fixed then they return it to the terminal for their "reward"... Kinda a neat twist on things I thought.
