Thread: Blaster Rifle Barrel variations

I started working up my first bunch of Blaster Rifle Barrel schematics last night, and came up with a few variations that I'd like to run past the experienced smiths.

As a baseline all-damage experiment, I came up with an 8-8 -.44 4-0-0-6. This rolled fairly frequently.

Then I rolled an 8-8 -.41 4-0-0-7. I had read in another thread that many rifleman don't consider the weapon speed to be the most important stat, so I traded off a smidgen of speed for a better ideal range (7).

But that got me thinking, and soon I was running experiments to see what could be done with ideal range.

I rolled a 6-6 -.33 3-0-0-10. For a 25% tradeoff in damage, I bumped up the ideal range nearly 43%.

I also rolled a 7-7 -.37 3-0-0-9. This is actually a better compromise, I traded a 12.5% reduction in damage for a 28.5% increase in ideal range.

Now, I'm something of a believer in the importance of accuracy; if you're not hitting the target, it doesn't matter what your damage rating is. So, I'm inclined to like the 7-7 -.37 3-0-0-9 model.

First, do these rolls suck? I've never done them before and have no reference.

Secondly, am I crazy to think that players will consider anything other than max damage when purchasing a weapon?

If you want accuracy, use the adv barrel instead. Max experimentation in damage with the rest into range (12 points total) gives something like 11-11 .34 with +15 or greater ideal range. I can't remember exact stats, not logged in right now.

It seems that most players only consider damage when buying a weapon, or at least look at damage first. I'm not saying that they'll necessarily turn down one gun because another one has one more point of damage, but the thing they won't be looking at is accuracy. A sophisticated customer might consider HAM and then accuracy and be willing to trade off for damage, but most of them won't.

What I normally do is experiment for damage first, then put whatever I have left into accuracy (for adv. barrels). However, I have made a few specialty weapons that I do in limited runs. For example, I made a D18 with +100 Ideal accuracy. I designed it from the barrel out (experimented primarily for accuracy), and used an advanced weapon scope experimented for accuracy. The downside, though, is that it only has 110 max damage and the HAM costs are pretty high for a D18.

Hope this is helpful to you.
