I'm sure some of you have heard about the new galaxy-wide vendor search that is in development.
From a customer point-of-view, it sounds like a great idea. You can find the items you want without having to worry about the empty vendor syndrome. And the items, in most cases, would be delivered to you. That's quite a time saver.
It should be obvious that this will put pressure on vendors to "equalize" prices and may even eliminate some price gouging that occassionally happens. Less obvious is market arbitrage: where vendors buy up low priced items and resell them at higher prices.
What I'm curious about is how you feel this will change our profession?

Well, if the people who want sliced weapons removed from vendors get their way, this would be a huge blow to starting smiths. Selling sliced weapons helps them offer some weapons that are comparable to more established smiths with better stats, even if it means that the newer smith's 35% slice might only equate to a 33% slice by the smith with better starting stats.
I guess the actual effect will depend on whether the vendor interface is upgraded and whether players really enjoy looking through thousands of weapons just to find the one they want. In my shop I have seperate Damage Sliced Vendors, Speed Sliced, Unsliced Melee, Unsliced Ranged, Unsliced Heavy Weapons/Grenades, Crate, and Bargain Weapons. Even with all those different vendors, people still have a hard time finding things, partly because they dont' use the sort functions and partly because the vendors incorrectly classify some weapons like gaderrifi batons as melee when they should be listed under 1H weapons. I think many players will find the global search overwhelming and will come to well-stocked shops like mine to do browsing at a more leisurely pace.

True, but on the other hand, I've spent hours travelling from vendor to vendor looking for something and come away empty handed. Even if the new search UI is not very good, a 30 minute vendor search would be much preferrable to all that wasted time.
I personally think that this feature will radically change the economy. I'm not sure if it will be better, but I hope so.
And I'm staying out of the sliced debate.

The global vendor search wil certainly be a mixed bag, lots of good stuff and some bad stuff too. When I was first starting out, I found a lot of great old resources collecting dust on some out of the way vendors. It was time-consuming but it helped me procure some resources that spawned before I was playing and I was rewarded for taking the intitiative and doing the searching. When this goes live, you can be sure that I and other smiths will hit the global search first thing and snatch up any old spawns sitting unappreciated on those vendors. I don't vendor browse like I used to due to more limited time so this will make it easy for me to buy up any resources I can use without the same effort that made them available to me in earlier days.
The global vendor will effectively eliminate the need to waste time browsing empty or understocked vendors and I think all players will welcome that, especially if you are searching for something that's not commonly found, like crates of backpacks.
I do think the global vendor will make it harder for emerging crafters to compete with more established crafters. In a matter of minutes shoppers can evaluate speed, damage, range, ham, and condition among all the smiths for the particular weapon they want and most players are willing to pay a bit more to have the best equipment so it may be tough going for smiths whose weapon stats are lagging slightly behind. As it stands now, players tend to focus on speed/dmg as they compare weapons from different crafters but will probably give more consideration to the other stats as well since it will all be right before them.
Sorry didn't meant to drag that other topic onto your thread but it would have negative ramifications for the newer guys if it ever happened.

I pretty much agree with everything you've said. Now most people I've dealt with have been great, but I still have visions of a WS with lots of cash using this new system as a way to "interfere" with other WS's business. I'm not sure how realistic that is nor am I sure how easy it will be to abuse this system. The law of unintended consequences comes to mind. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
As for the slicing issue, don't worry about mentioning. I honestly can't decide how I feel about this. As a relatively new WS, I can see both sides of the issue.

I believe this will actually help new crafters get started. Most people tend to come to the same merchants for thier goods, whether it be weapons, armor, food, etc.... Now that these products can/will be all listed from all merchants, the shops that don't have any reputation will be seen with all the "big names"

As a new smith who's still collecting needed resources, still hoping to luck into exp. tapes, and then after all of that, still going to have to work my butt off to make a mark in a very competitive market with long-time well known crafters... yes, I'm worried

It'll turn into Ebay
People spending all their time standing in front of bazaar terminals, double clicking through thousands of vk's to find the one that is 'krayt enhanced' lol. Interesting idea - playing a game on a computer about playing a game on a computer.
Downsides I can see:
- pricing collapsing
- never again going into a vendor you happen to be passing and being amazed at the interior decor
- buying an item you never intended to buy, but did after taking a bit at the 'amazing loots at knockdown prices' vendor gathering dust in the corner
- new crafters not selling a bean. Why would anyone buy a vk with 10 less damage when one of us old schoolers is selling em at the same price with better stats and condition
Upsides:
- prices becoming uniform across the galaxy
- access to commodity product without moving an inch
- no more advertising (unless they make it a prerequisite for global vendoring)
- bulky terminals are back ! aesthetics are straight out the window, skill points are potentially freed up..
Yuck

I fear being able to compete price wise with some of the veterenWS who surely have a lower overhead per weapon. I don't worry about it too much though, it won't help anything to worry.
