Thread: Ethics of Marketing Pre-Patch Guns before the actual Patch

Hello Fellow Weaponsmiths and Readers of the Weaponsmith Forum,

I am curious to hear your opinions on a topic I was thinking about. Today I came across a server board advertisement for "Pre-nerf" FWG5s. (If you are reading this thread post patch, keep in mind this is being written before the patch has even gone live) This particular advertisement offered them by the crateful. I am sure it is not uncommon to see this advertisement on many different server boardsgiven the anticipation of the upcomming patch and the changes scheduled for the FWG5 schematic. If I were a combat person reading that ad,I would certainly be enticed to stock up on these FWG5sbefore the weaponsmiths run out of them.

My gripe here is certainly not in the selling offinely crafted weapons. The weaponsmiths on my server and yours make exceptional FWG5s and Krayt Model FWG5s.We spend alot of time selecting and harvesting the best resources for these weapons. Instead, where I have some ethical conflict is in the actual marketing that was used. For us to aggressively advertise and market "Pre-nerf" FWG5s before the patch has even gone live is, to me, a bit unethical. Yes, as a good weaponsmith, I believe we should inform the public that a possible "nerf" to the weapon may be coming and what is happening currently on test center. But the truth is we do not know what the final word is going to be on the final damage rating of the FWG5 with any degree of certainty. It has not gone live yet. I read a post the other day that pistols may even get a boost to damage. So who knows, the FWG5 could even turn out better.

Another reason why I think it is unethical to advertise something as"pre-nerf" gun before a patch is that I think it is a dirty way to make a quick buck. The weaponsmith or merchantisscaring the public into believing that if they don't stockpilethe weapons now, then they won't be able to buy them post patch. If the patch does go through and the FWG5 does get "nerfed", then of course there will be a market for the pre-nerf guns. But if the FWG5 doesn't really get nerfed, then all the weaponsmiths who sold you the "pre-nerf" guns will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Somehow making a premium on something we are anticipating to happen but hasn't happened yetjust doesn't seem right.

Thoughts, anyone?

If Nothing else I do honestly appluad your ethics!

To often in games of this nature people POWERGAME to the max, ethics, morals all else falls to the wayside over "stats" people will pay an extra 10,000 to have that 1 pt less of HAM. Granted I fully understand why, but it's still sad. I am hoping, almost against hope, that Honest Hardworking Weaponsmiths will still be able to turn a buck in the game, while keeping a good rep with the people. I hope we can do this without having to soil our hands with underhanded practices, or back alley deals.

I don't honestly see it as a big deal. At best the FWG will end up no worse off after the patch. At worst, it will end up a little worse.

And if you wanted a Krayt FWG, well, of course that will soon be impossible.

So i don't see a problem with it.

I have no ethics lol i wish i did...

I made 5k FWG5 212 max dmg 1.7sec b4 the patch.

I am gambling tho, they could all get nerfed or they could stay the same.

I do admire your priciple tho.

I have mixed feelings about this....

The way I justify it is this......

Look at the real world......and how insurance companies work. They earn all their money on what MIGHT happen. So, with that in mind.....I happily price hiked my FWG5's.

I wholeheartedly believe that post-patch, the krayt FWG5's will walk all over the new "enhanced feeder" FWG5's. Thats just my opinion, since I have no idea what the new feeders will turn out like....I could be totally wrong

I felt that I was being true to my customers in that despite the fact I could stockpile these weapons until after the patch and sell them for perhaps even more.......I chose to continue with pre-patch sales at slightly inflated prices.

Ethics?

Very open to interpretation.

The way I see it......I'm here to provide a service. That service involves me spending my time making weapons for people with the best resources I can get my hands on, answering myaverage 3 tells per minute regarding weapon related questions, even delivering too. I don't get time to go out holocron hunting. If I want to unlock the FS slot, I have to buy my holocrons. If people don't like my prices....then.....its simple....go to another weaponsmith!

Do you see people queueing up at the Burger King counter complaining that their Whoppers are too expensive and how they could get a similar thing cheaper at McDonalds across the road? Nah. If cash is an issue....they walk straight into McDonalds.

Well thats my little rant

Pre-nerf FWG5s: 1.8 speed, 61-205 dmg

Post-nerf(using the same exact resources except i used the fixed dmg advacned feed mechs) :2.2 speed, 61-168 dmg.

37 points of dmg, .4 sec of speed reduced. I would say thats more than "just a little worse", thats a 20% nerf.

Hello,

Well, I kind of have mixed issues on this. Sure they guy is trying to make a quick buck with scare tactics and the like. But I think it would be more un-ethical to stock-pile the weapons until after the patch, building up a nice reserve then once they are missed in the market, cracking open his crates for an ungodly amount. Like I said it could go either way. But it is nice to know someone else is actually thinking "is this right?" I've seen a lot of selfishness in this game, and life.

Love,

Well creating items b4 nerf is not unethical since they allow u to craft the weapons and they dont nerf the existing ones after patch. Now, if they wouldnt have warned us about the FWG5 then perhaps i wouldnt have 5k FWg5 sitting on my factories. Stockpiling Pre Nerf stuff is not unethical its smart. How about the people that stockpile good resources? is the unethical too? U either stay with the top weaponsmiths in the server or u will just fall behind and loose customers.

It would be unethical if he was lying, deceiving, or misleading them. As it is, he's done his customers a huge favor (have you seen post-patch stats yet?)

new FWG5 have dropped the same stats as you Power Handlers since they were removed from schematic.

Ex:

Powerhandler stats

39 max -.39

My Prenerf stats

212 max dmg 1.7 sec

Post patch

173 max dmg 2.1sec

Thats exactly why i stored 5000 FWG5 b4 the nerf. Devs stated it was coming and everyone in game talked about it. Every smart weaponsmith should have done the same thing i did.

One think for sure, if you don't have any money, no one will care about you, but if you do, you can care about others if you want to.

Some interesting points here, butfor some of the above posts, Ithink my original post was misunderstood. I feel there was nothing wrong withstockpiling the guns if you felt they were going to get nerfed. You are taking the risk with your resources, not the customer in doing this.I made asome too. I only wanted to bring up a discussion on whetherit was questionable tocall something "Pre-nerf" and therefore make a premium on it before it actually happened.

Given that the guns are truly "nerfed" I guess my point is moot, hehe. We can officially call the guns that are already made pre-nerf. Anyone got stats on the Republic blaster?
