The devs are frustrated that each profession only ever uses one or two type of weapon, the ones certed in Master box as these will always be better than any weapon from half way up the tree.
The solution to this is to bring in a new system where crafting the weapon is replaced with crafting a weapon core, where a final skin can be applied so the look of every weapon is being used can be got. There are three lvls of core, basic, standard and advanced. The advanced cores will use twice the number of resources as any old weapon, take three times as long in a factory, and only have a single experimentation line where increasing the max damage also increases the special attack cost on a linear line. Also 2/3 of the resources used have never been used in WS before, this way it ensures the playing field is fare for new players...
Everyone now runs around with the advanced cores with 400/900 damage and 3.0 speed, as the resources on the server are identical everyone end product is identical, the way you are classed a great smith now is by the quality of your looted components. The devs claim success due to the look of the visual game with every one is running round with different skins. When George comes to town and they give him a sneak look he can see the diversity of the game and goes away safe in the knowledge of what a wonderful job SOE are doing with his baby, after all the polls of 95% completely happy can't be wrong.

This is basically what they are doing already:a DL-44XT is comparable to a DE-10. Similar damage/speed stats, different skins.

so far he is right... all high end weapons seem to be capped. Even the slices are capped.

Ummm, basically he's just showing how badly the AS are being $crewed in the CURB. If WS were getting nailed like they are, this is what would happen to us. Basically factory times increased, resource requirements would increase and would need completely new ones, and all the weapons would be the same across the board but with different skins to them. This is essentially what has happened to the AS come CU time. They have been bent over the rail and didn't even get a reach-around on this one. So, thank whatever deity you believe in that you are all WS's and not AS's, cuz they are gonna hurt come CU time.

the best thing they could do is make 3 weapon classes for each elite profession,lets call the 1/2/3 for now.
now weapon 1 has the highest damage but suffers from speed
weapon 2 is faster but has a low acc
weapon 3 is kinda like a good all round,but not too good as to be the only choice for every one
let the customer decide what he wants,i like the idea giving the weapons different skins is good let the
skin dictate the max/min damage type so if you got 6 skins lets say a/b/c/d/e/f
so a damages stun
b damages energy
c damages cold
d damages heat
e.t.c
then the ws could make weapon 1c a gun that targets cold.this would generate alot more choice for the customer giving the weaponsmith many more lines to trade in
as regards for novice ws grinding not making any money they do the same as they have with the lower lev professions by capping the weapons max speed/dam/range/cost then they still got a market to sell to with the grinders make it so that the uber weapons can only be used by the master elite then there will be need for weaponsmiths of any standard,almost make it so that full weapon repair skill mods are given to novice weaponsmiths and get tiny amounts of xp for repairing weapons so they can charge for the service with no bonus given to master ws so even if they cant sell the exspensive weapons they still get paid repairing them.
the idea of making master ws make the componants,may resolve in novice ws struggling to find money to get the parts needed to make the weapons needed to get money they may be stuck in that nasty little circle.
I got a master ws on corbantis i dont earn money that quick but considering i started ws as a new toon about 1 month ago i thought it was fairly easy i just grinded up the expirement tree then role played a bit by putting swords on the bazaar to my amazement they sold im currently worth around 600k at the mo even tho its not alot it was thro crap swords and c.swords i made enough grind with
