I am going to start weaponsmith because it is a profession that I might like and I would like to make my own Polearms. Since I am going to make my own Polearms I decided that I was going to master but not focus on guns like every single weaponsmith on my server, Sunrunner, to give the melee community some really nice nice standard weapons.
For those who are in the know can you post some tips and advice for my advancement up the weaponsmith tree? Also, if you also focus on melee weapons and have pointers that would be good. Useful URLs are great too. I am going to read the FAQs and the such but I want to hear what is really current and up to date.
Thanks in advance,

Grind Pistol barrels until you get firearms 1, then grind rifle barrels until you get to master. Probly wanna go techniques first, then the rest.
www.swgcraft.com - learn to love it.
Harvest resources you need while grinding, especially platenite copper, desh copper, and Solid Petro 3. all UT dependent, platenite can get into the high 700's, desh, you'd be lucky with high 300's, and petro quality doesn't matter.
Next is getting high SR stuff. Steel, ditanium steel is essential for Polearms. Make sure to lookout for Kammris iron because it tends to be very high in SR.
Resources are #1 always.

If your going for the whole melee line of weapons don't forget to look for dolovite iron and polymers with great shock resistance as well. The iron is needed for the advance reinforcement cores and the polymer is required for most of the different swords. Also along with the desh and plantine coppers keep an eye out for polysteel copper as well. Polysteel copper has a tendnecy to have a high shock and is very useful for most vibro type weapons made. Oh and duralloy and carbonite steel, very important, they have a tendency to have high shock resistance too.

I must say, as a new master weaponsmith myself, I think I wish i would have started with melee as well. There are just so many more ranged weapons on the market, and the amount of top quality resources you need to find to produce even decent ranged weapons are way more than melee. With the exception of the dolovite iron, i think melee seems to be a good way to get started, and aquainted with the art of making/selling weapons... good luck!!

try to obtain skill tapes when you can. I have found that when it comes to melee subcomponents those 2 extra points are paramount (till they nerf it soon if the publish comes in like TC, but thats a different issue). Spending 3 points on range on a reinforcement core or sword core; lowering hams on vibro motors etc... these type of changes are paramount. Melee specials are so awesome that you dont have to nitpick speed/damage like firearms do. For example, that -28 range mod on a powerhammer sucks big time. Even as a master swordsman (when hologrinding an alt char) I missed a lot. Even w/o the +20 skill tapes at the time I was able to make a power hammer w/ -8 range mods by giving up on some of the damage when making the reinforcement core. This difference was profound and I really found myself killing mobs much faster with 2handed area3 attack because I was hitting them much much more often. Knowing this can take you from being just an ordinary melee smith to one specializing in PvP weaponry.
