Is there any better way to get xp when you start out then to just sit and craft d-18s .. ? any tips on speeding up the process ?

yes, but you won't like it.
Make projectile pistol barrels till firearms 1, then make projectile RIFLE barrels the rest fo the way (go up techniques first if you want to sell things).
You might want to concentrate on getting the 450,000 units of steel first, though.

And as an aside,buy a mouse (I recommend the Microsoft Intellipoint) with a wheel on it that clicks. Download the IntelliPoint driver from Microsoft (if it didn't come with) and set up the wheel click to be double click and one of the side buttons to be enter. Once I did this, it REALLY sped up those barrel assemblies. It was the best thing I did while grinding.

heh if you realy want to do it fast set up a controler witha double click butten...then make the crafting macro. hover your pointer over where steel shows up and tape the controler butten down. Now walk away and come back wen your exp caps.
