Always wondered what to look for in a weapon since cu, and figured you are the best guys to ask.
But what is more important for a weapon higher dmg ranges or a higher dps?

an issue thats been beaten about alot recently, current thinking is high max & min with as low a SAC as you can get. speed is 'relatively' irrelivant (if you've got a good set of speed skills & SEAs)

Look at all the stats on the weapon to see if it meets your needs. DPS is a misleading overview of a weapon. It doesn't tell you much. For example a 300 DPS could be lots of things...
400-800, 2.0 speed = 300 DPS
200-1000, 2.0 speed = 300 DPS
500-1000, 2.5 speed = 300 DPS
700-800, 2.5 speed = 300 DPS
Pay attention to the accuracy bonus as well, the higher your accuracy compared to your targets defense mods, the more damage you will do with the weapon, this is not factored into the DPS equation.
400-800, 2.0 speed = 300 DPS
200-1000, 2.0 speed = 300 DPS
500-1000, 2.5 speed = 300 DPS
700-800, 2.5 speed = 300 DPS

My thoughts on this are look for a nice and low SAC, then look for damage.
This is the way i craft most of my weapons unless asked otherwise because from personal use low action equals 0 damage.

DPS is a rough estimate of what a gun could do. But it is not a buying factor really. It does not take into account any important factors like accuracy mods and defence penalties or CL LvL. Managable SAC should come first. Your DPS is zero when you see the too tired popping over your head. Then how you play the game factors in. If you are PvP oriented you will most likely be up against players with high defences. This makes the minimum damage of the weapon more important. The higher the ratio of opponets defence to your accuracy the more the output goed towards minimum damage. If you do alot of PvE then high maximum damage is king. This is not to say that PvE targets wont also have high defence, but its not a given like PvP. Speed can be gained from tapes, doc buffs, slicing and proper profession stacking, making it not of the highest importance in crafting.
