I understand that I have to count from top left down to it, excluding the schematics that the weapon crafting tool cannot make. Is there any way to know which it cant make other than by looking at the weapon crafting tool itself? Does the number change as your number of available schematics increases? I'd appreciate it if someone would just tell me what the schem number for metal staff is at novice weaponsmith level. Thanks.

count all the schematics especially if you are standing in front of a crafting station. Whatever schematic comes up, if it is wrong, then just open up your CTRL+D and count from that schematic to the one you want and adjust your schematic number in your macro accordingly.
