Going up the munitions branch to get to heavy warhead mechanisms will get you there a lot faster, but they are resource specific and sometimes the required resources are hard to come by (or else very expensive). But they do give you a little over 700xp per combine, so the grind is definitely a lot shorter.

I'm currently doing the WS grind (what else can it be called), and I'm just wondering what is the fastest grind to master.
I have heard two opinions on this..
the first involved grinding pistol and rifle barrels endlessly..
the second involved going up the munitions tree (but didn't mention what to grind)
I read through the stickies, and the only one I found was the first suggestion, which isn't necessarily the fastest, just the most economic. If I'm not worried about resources (i just want to get there so I can start playing around making decent weapons) - weapons I probably won't even sell to be honest
- what should I be grinding.
Thanks in advance.
