DPS is a better representation of good stats for those who just look for the greatest damage they can get on a weapon. With an emphasis now on speed, there's 2 ways to increase DPS: Damage and Speed, since DPS is an average amount of damage per second.

You usually want the highest DPS. Most weapons, pistol, carbine, rifle, etc. have comparable DPS across the board for CL. However; if you have someone who has a lot of weapons speed (pistoleer), you can put a lot more in Damage and their modified DPS will be significantly higher. Hope this helps.

and just to make sure i do get it i have a couple ns lance's that are over 350 dps

I don't remember the certification, but if it's for anything under level 54, yeah, that's pretty good base DPS to have.

I have found that close to 300 is stock grade on some higher level weapons. Most fall in the 280-290 though some go up to 300. There is kinetic and energy damage now with elemental damage also.
