I am knew to WeaponSmith, I don't have my master yet but expect to soon.
I have seen the optional components in crafting weapons, but can't tell what goes in these boxes.
Can anyone give me an idea how to tell what resources I can use in this option?

Take a look at the sticky:
Comprehensive Weaponsmith Loot Enhancements/Components/Schematics
The first section has enhancements listed for the various [optional slots]in components.
