I started WS a couple weeks ago. I've gathered all the resourcs I need to make a fair number of guns and weapons (all kinds...), and almost ready to start advertising my business and trying to sell guns.
But when I first started, I had several guildmates tell me that the market (my server is Tarquinas) was oversaturated with weapons, and that I'd be lucky to sell a few guns a day. They also said that I'd probably not make much of a profit, if any.
I'm a Wookiee, 10 pts weaponsmith. Too poor to buy the mods to become an 11pt or 12pt (at least for now), but I really think that those extra points are overrated - hardly anybody cares abouta few pts difference in HAM or range.I bought a lot of really nice resources, and my weapons are up there with the "famous" weaponsmiths. My goal is to become a well known, well respected, well liked Weaponsmith on the server.
My guildmates sort of act like I really don't have much of a chance... But I've started noticing that even just by wearing the Master WS title, I get a lot of requests for guns and what not - obviously there's a market out there. I also made2 krayt/gorax wookiee bowcasters for a friend to give to another friend, and the guy /telled me a few days later saying that they were the best guns he's ever used. Obviously I have the ability to make some good stuff, but my guild still acts like I should just stick to making custom stuff and looted schematics.
What do you guys think?

Making custom stuff and looted schematics for who? just them?
Am a 10 pt. smith myself, I build weapons with the best possible resources I have, price them accordingly, and sell quite a few weapons daily.
The key is the location of your shop, and your customer service skills. You treat the customers fairly and nicely and you will do just fine.
Not saying that you have to kiss everyones rear end, just be pleasant and honest with them, word will start to spread about you and your shop, and bingo! you are well-known and respected
Just my 2 cents

The whole purpose of a guild is to be a member of a group of people who all support each other.
It sounds to me like you need to leave your guild and join one that will support you in what you want to do in the game instead of beating you down.

No no, it's not the guild... they've given me all the schematics and a bunch of resources, and given me a fair amount of business. But it's more that they are doing it out of kindness because I enjoy WS, not because they expect me to become very popular.
I'll prove em wrong - I'll sell stuff! Lots of it!

1) You are you, and not your guildmembers, if you think you can do this, well do it.
2) It will take months to become a respected WS
3) Indeed the market is saturated with weapons, but i think this is because the game is soo unbalanced atm that people took a crafting job. PvE is boring atm, PvP is useless and unbalanced.
Just wait for the combat ablance and watch the market bloom

Are you smoking something ? The CB will only nerf PvE even moreand pvp will be, well, like it is now. They will be reducing armor, reducing weapon strength and reducing buffs. What exactly will have changed ? Nothing.
Edit: Forgot to say, they won't be nerfing CMs so it will be even better when that dot brings you down to 1 health in a single tick !

People in general do not understand the crafting process and what it takes to compete. Not only that, there is such a large # of people on the servers at any givin time there are always people looking for a new weapon. Earn the respect of your guild by proving that you can match the stats of the "famous" smiths. Customer service is the #1 thing you can do to get your foot in the door, if you treat someone like they are dumb because they dont understand there is no such thing as a 300dmg VK or a 2.0speed T21, you'll be ignored lol. It took me several months after becoming master to gather all the resources I needed to match the stats of older smiths, but since then I've had no problems with my business

Well Bacon I originally became WS for my guild/city after the other one quit: up until that point I had no focus or direction in the game other than selling resources. I never got into it with the intention of being an "uber" smith, just to make guns cheap for my mates. 9 months later I'm still at it mostly for the fact that I enjoy it. I get mentioned in the same breath as other WS on tarquinas that are considered "uber" even though I hold a lot of them in higher stead than myself.
Guildies have come to me over the months to say that such-and-such weapon is so much better than the one they bought off of [server-wide respected WS] and I tell them what I'll tell you now: a good smith is defined by their resources and the knowledge of how to use their points.
12 points does make a difference but it's just as you say, no-one really pays much heed to HAM/range/condition (although they should IMO).
In so far as tarquinas as a server in respect to weapon sales...
It sucks. I sell enough but most all of my income has been split between loot-crafting and dedicated buyers from my guild. I have other return custom but I certainly would not have the turn over of Morbus or Nosup. The thing about tarq is it's not a busy place. We have a great community but it's a small one. Definitely the market is oversaturated. There are waaay too many weapons for sale out there and due to certain resource pops in the last 3-4 months and the proliferance of heavy harvesters belonging to clueless resource dealers, it's possible for a relatively new WS (like yourself) to compete with many of the old smiths in terms of creating high end weapons.
Really though the hard part is getting the word out there about yourself. You've never really cracked it till your name is mentioned in the buff line or shuttle queue in respect to who's vendor to go to. Vendor location is a huge issue also I think. Mine is kinda out of the way (suits me fine) but you'll notice nearly all the big smiths on tarq have/had their vendors outside Cnet. I'm sure it's the same on all servers but on a quieter one like ours it matters a lot more since our small population tend to amass solely in cnet or theed. Like someone else said on here don't listen to your guild and just do your thing. If it's consolation I'm getting tired of this game in it's current guise (see sig) and if it doesn't radically improve in the coming weeks/months you'll have one less competitor in tarquinas galaxy...

It took me four months from getting the second account to Master and get a customer base going...and that is the second account too. Main is Smuggler (hint, I slice the weapons my WS makes). So WS account went from nothing to at present 2.5 million credits in 4 months. And I can hardly keep up with the sales.
