Thread: Proposal for making weapons more varied

I posted this in the Core Systems forum... perhaps that was the wrong place... So here it is again... Please refrain from flaming me if you don't like it, as the say, if you don't have anything good to say...

Forgive me if this kind of thing has already been suggested, I need to get it out before I forget it all...

I'd like to see a system where by you can add components to weapons to add a different damage type to a weapon, to either replace or add to it's current damage.

I was thinking about this while replying to the TKA post about wanting a new damage type, seeing I am returning to TKM, I find the profession itself utterly boring, but Ilike martial arts and the profession works and it's powerful.

So in order to make all profession more fun and give everyone a broader in game experience, I feel that you should be able to either craft or loot, most likely both, a component that can add to or replace the damage type of a weapon. I get the feeling that the way the game is coded, replacement would be easier.

So if I looted some kind of Refridgeration Core Generator or something then my favourite weaponsmith could place the item as an optional component in my vibro knucklers and I could have Ice Knuckers... Apply similar theory to each damage type and there you go.

I do not know if the devs want the damage types restricted by profession, I sure hope they're not as narrowminded to do that, and if they have I'd like to know why.

I hope you all like my suggestion, if not, please feel free to comment.

I know I'll get flamed, but I'd love to see experimentation at least for components splitted into min damage, max damage and speed.
This way it would be possible to have kinda slow and unreliableweapons, but with huge max damage or weapons with nearly same min and max damage, either slower with higher overall damage or faster with lower overall damage.
Also this would help in making guns for special use.

Anyone?

I like the idea of changing damage types, but I think we all know what type everyone will choose...

Ok, major problem with this idea. Weapons are tweaked based on their damage type so there is a more level playing field. Let's face it, stun damage is pretty wicked, there is very little worthwhile armor out there to protect against it and alot of beasties and NPC's are vulnerable to it. That's why the tangle pistol and stun baton generally suck so bad when compared to other weapons in their class. If all of a sudden we can change the damage type of a weapon, what's the point of crafting the weapon that was supposed to be that damage type in the first place? Not a flame, just not a terribly feasible idea.

stun batons and geonosian pistols are anything but weak, I've seen lots of geo pistols with 220+ dmg and stun batons with well over 350 dmg and that blows the damage dealing professions aka swordsman out of the water, the power hammer which can be fitted with acklay bone is useless in PvP and the scythe can't be modified enough to make an outstanding difference in PvP and too rare to use in PvE

They are limiting at least some of the damage types to certain professions for god knows what reason. The reward rifle from the Bestine quest was kinetic for a few days, then they changed it to energy (USELESS) because "kinetic should be a protected melee damage type". Never mind that the Striker pistol has always been kinetic, even after the Tusken rifle was changed to energy (USELESS)...

Splitting damage experimentation into damage and speed lines is a good idea in theory but would require a major rewrite of all weapon stats and experimentation code so I doubt if it'll ever happen, and if it does it'll either make all pre-patch weapons obsolete, or turn all new weapons into crap and break the economy.

POKEY THE PENGUIN SIG REMOVED BY GARVA BECAUSE "Just because you are crafty enough to get around the technicality of it being a .jpg or .gif does not mean it is not an image, it is not ascii art, it is an image" SO HERE IS MY NEW SIG.

Cant happen, I say this because I think that damage type is a critical aspect in balancing professions. If the dev's give up that control the combat balance would get thrown way out of whack.

The idea is based on making professions more fun and interesting disregarding the cost of the implementation. Things can be retweaked given time. Sure this idea would take a lot of code changes, and I mean a lot, but in the end, should result in more available tactics to each class, and therefore more fun. If was really living in this starwars world where people can make normal blade weapons vibrate, I'm sure I'd find a way to charge my vk's with electricity.

A valid comment though none-the-less, thank you.
