I'm pretty new at this game, a few days or so, and therefore when I came up with an interesting hybrid character it had a few flaws where I had gaps in my knowledge.
The idea was for a master droid eng, plus some pistol skill (half-master pistoleer), smuggler skill (half-master smuggler) and half-master weaponsmith. By half-master I mean mastering two out of the four skill branches, in wsmith they would be firearms crafting and crafting techniques.
My question is thus:
Although it fits with my character for her to have these skills, is it worth it? Should I even bother? Would the skill points be better put to use elsewhere?
It is of course possible for me to rearrange it so I have master weaponsmithing (dropping the pistoleer skills), but without surveying and business skills, again it seems a little pointless.
Am I barking up the wrong skill tree?

You could do it but your weapon quality will suffer as you will only have 7 experimentation points. You will need +25 in tapes to get up to 100 and 10 points.

mm yes, it was the experimentation points thing that I didn't know about in the first place and was pointed out to me by a friend. I initially decided to drop the pistoleering to go master weaponsmith, but now I get the feeling I may as well ditch it altogether and just slice other people's weapons.

I agree that your weapons will suffer in the end and you'll be limited to making just ranged weapons. It'll be difficult to be terribly successful (financially) by only catering to a certian percentage of the combat professions and then only making average quality weapons.
As for being able to do it without surveyingskills, that can be done if you make arrangements with other players to do your surveying for you or buy your resources from other vendors. As for selling your wares, you'll be limited to the bazaar (and therefore 6K weapons apiece) or arranging with someone who has merchant skills.
My 2 cr. I think in the long run, you'd be more satisified if you mastered one artisan profession and when you got bored wth it, move on to the other you had your eye on.

Right, thanks. I think I'll drop the smithing on this character and put the skill points to better use.
Thanks for all your help.

I am a Master Swordsman / Master Weaponsmith at the moment. But to better serve my customers and be less relient on not-online-often-enough Smugglers to slice my weapons, I want to be a Slicer too.
This is the set up I am looking at:
Master Weaponsmith
Slicer
Surveyor (A must if you don't like to wait for people to mine for you.)
Master Teras-Kasi or Pistoleer (because I like to have some kind ofcombat profession, and it fits in with Smuggler requirements)

I tend to disagree with the previous posters - I reckon a specialist 7-point smith is viable, especially as you seem to mainly want to be a DE. You only need +5 in attachments to get to be an 8-point smith (and the toolbelt will give you +3 I think) if you want a slight edge on 7-point smiths... but of course so much relies on the quality of resources that you'd probably not notice this.
I reckon: go for it. If it doesn't suit you, you can always try a different combination of skills. I'm all for unique templates.
You won't be able to compete with Master WSs on either range or quality... but perhaps by providing decent firearms to your droid customers, you'll be able to get an edge on other DEs!
