Hello all,
I've recently started my new character, and spent quite a while thrashing out the way I'd like to take her. After much thought and input from Armoursmiths and Weaponsmiths I knew, I have gone for:
Master Weaponsmith
Master Smuggler
Merchant 3001
and pre-requisites.
I do not intend on using this character for making credits, for which I can work for with another character. What I am looking to do is have her hand-craft weapons, slice them if required and make them only to order for people. Nothing at all will be made in a factory, every component hand made, every weapon hand made and named to the person's request.
It's reminiscent to me of the olde blacksmiths standing over a forge and hand-crafting a fine blade, then adorning it with some signature or icons.
I'm really looking forward to the challenge of achieving my goal (and then the just as scary challenge of finding resources).
What I seem to be unsure of is the role of a Weaponsmith before they hit Master.
As say, a rifleman, I could still go out hunting at low levels, as a musician I could still play in a band. I'm currently only 0301 Weaponsmith, slowly making my way to 0404 before tackling the other two trees, but I can't say that I could find any intermediate use for my current skills.
Do Weaponsmiths feel that reallt they have to focus and grind to Master before they can consider offering their wares, or do they feel that beginner and intermediate Weaponsmiths do indeed have a role they can play?
Thank you for reading, I'm really looking forward to the challenge of being a fine and reputable Weaponsmith.

once you get to x/x/x/4 you can make average low end weapons (get a tool kit too) and sell them for a couple of K on the bazaa just to cover your costs as ws is a cash sink and a half.
once you master then you can do your custom stuff.
you will however need at least one factory
as alot of the higher weapons require "identical units from a factory crate"
if you can afford it/ find it get a pre nerf crafting station if not get the best you can find i like bubba's ones
also you may wanna read the slackers guide to grinding weaponsmithing some where down below this thread. If you can afford it you can master alot quicker

Hate to pee on your parade, but that's impossible. Unless you can tell me the secret of hand-crafting identical subcomponents
If you do any volume of business, you'll always be running power handlers
Good for you. I am also a MWS, and VERY dedicated to quality. I run like crazy harvesting the very finest resources from the far-reaches of the galaxy. My stuff is about as good as a 10-pointer can get on my server.
While I do prefer hand-crafting my guns, I also do a fair amount of factory work. It's like sometimes experimentation is so awful, once I do get something good I'm just like "damn, make a schematic so I don't have to do that again fora while..."
I've been at it for a few months, and now I finally feel like I can compete in the market and am now really starting to get my products out. If I have learned anything from the old masters, it's to get your product and your name out there, and set up vendors wherever you can. People are generally lazy, and expecting them to come to you is a mistake. Unless you're super-respected and you have custom orders coming out your ears.

Hmm, thanks for pointing out abou the factory crate thing - I can cope with that if that's the way the game works.
As for output, I wouldn't have a problem with making 10 weapons a month. I'm a roleplayer so I spend half my time piddling about doing not much at all 8) and I'm not doing Weaponsmith for the cash.
I really would do one weapon a month for a customer, if it meant me finding the resources, building it bit by bit, naming it for them and handing it over face to face.
It may only be 90% the quality of a top WS item, but it wasn't plucked off a shelf, it was made just for them. They may only use it occassionally, may have it put on the wall as decoration. But I made that item for them, and took time doing so.
*goes glassy eyed*
Oh boy, I can see some serious grinding this weekend
