Thread: Weapon crafting and cert proposal.

With the delay of the combat balance/revamp, I think it is time for a
change in the way weapons crafting and certification works. Now I’m
not a weaponsmith, but I have done some research into it and I’m
leveling a new alt to be one, so if I get some things wrong please
stick with me.

The Certification change:

Currently every class uses one or two “best” weapons. These are the
ones that deal the most damage or hit for the best damage type (stun
currently). I’d love to see more variety in the weapons each class
uses. I think every Pistoleer would love to run around with a scoped
DL-44, but face it, you can’t do jack with it. My proposal is to do
certification based off a weapon use modifier, not the weapon frame
type. Each weapon will be given a number (similar to CL for creatures)
based on how it is crafted, more on this later. As you pick up a box
in each tree you get a bonus to your weapon use modifier. Take pistol
II for example, currently you get the scoutblaster cert, you can now
use that weapon regardless of how the weapon is crafted. Under my
proposed system you would get, say, +5 to your weapon use modifier.
Each new box would give you a bump to your use, similar to how accuracy
and speed work now. Each weapon would have a weapon use value that
would decide if you could use it, not the frame type.

The crafting change:

Currently each weapon is made of a few sub components, the quality of
these components changes the damage/speed/condition of the weapon, but
the damage range, type and AP of the weapon are decided by the frame
used. This is what I propose be changed. Under my system different
components would decide these attributes. Each ranged weapon would
have a power handler, a blaster unit, a barrel, and a capacitor. The
power handler would decide the damage value, the blaster unit would
decide the damage type, the barrel the AP value and accuracy, and the
capacitor the speed of the weapon, the frame would be just graphics.
Lets build an “uber l33t” DL-44 for the master pistoleer so he can be
like his hero Han Solo, and also deal with the defense stackers. We
grab a 150-300 power handler (WU +15), a stun blaster unit (WU +25), an
AP1 barrel with +25 accuracy (WU +30), a 2.0 capacitor (WU +15) and a
+25 scope (WU +15). We assemble all of this and get a weapon with the
base stats of the components we used, so our DL-44 now is 150-300 Stun
damage – 2.0 speed with AP1, accuracy of +50 at ideal, and a weapons
use modifier of 100. It is now time to experiment on the weapon to get
all these different components to work together flawlessly. So we put
5 points into damage/speed, 2 into accuracy, 1 into condition, and 2
into ease of use. Each experiment is an amazing success, we end up
with, say, 175-400 stun damage – 1.5 speed with AP1, accuracy of +75 at
ideal and the weapon use modifier had raised to 120, but the
experimentation has dropped it back to 90. (I’d crap myself for this
weapon!) Now you’d have to be a good way through the pistoleer tree to
have this high of a weapon use. Say we wanted to craft a weapon for a
marksman with pistol II, lets do another DL-44 because, face it, Han is
the man and every newb wants to be like him too. We grab the following
components: 50-100 power handler (WU +5), an energy blaster unit (WU
+5) an AP0 barrel with +15 accuracy (WU +5) and a 3.0 capacitor (WU +5)
and put them all together. Now we have a DL-44 with 50-100 energy
damage, 3.0 speed, accuracy of +15 at ideal, and a weapon use of 20.
We only put 1 experimentation point into ease of use, this is a newb
weapon after all. So we end up with a DL-44 with the following stats
50-100 energy damage, 3.0 speed, +15 accuracy at ideal and a weapon use
of 18. Now we have two DL-44’s, one that a newb can be proud of and
one that a master pistoleer would gladly use. Each component’s WU
would be based off the quality of the unit, so not all scopes will be
+15, if you wanted to put a scope on the newb DL-44 you could craft one
that was +1 at ideal range that would only add, say, +1 to weapon use.
As you can see this would also eliminate the need to be a master WS to
sell weapons. Currently if you make a crappy weapon no one is going to
buy it, If I’m certified for a ScoutBlaster bhy would I buy a 36-75/2.0
when my cert for a ScoutBlaster covers any one, even a Krayt’d 150-
300/.7? Now the novice weaponsmith can make something that he can
sell. The “buyability” of his weapon is based on the users skill, not
if he makes the best weapon in that class.

Melee would work in a similar fashion. I don’t know a single thing
about crafting melee weapons, but maybe something like damage enhancers
to pick the damage type, reinforcing components for the damage amounts,
and weight reduction components for speed.

Obviously there would need to be balancing of the weapon use modifiers,
I just made them up as I went, no system or anything. I weighed stun
heavy since it is devastating right now, same with the AP level, it
makes a huge difference. Each type of weapon would have it own weapon
use modifiers, similar to experience now. So you couldn’t use a WU 100
rifle with 100 Pistol WU.

There are many benefits to this system. First it takes the pure grind
out of weaponsmith, weapons made my non-masters will be worth a damn,
unlike the current situation. Another benefit is the fear that it
would add to PvP play. Is that guy with the DL-44 a newb that can only
do 100 damage or does he have some crazy custom built unit? You will
not know until he fires. A final benefit is that not everyone will be
running around with exactly the same weapon. It will bring the variety
that weapons (and armor) currently lack in the high-end area of the
game.

What I would like to see is a change in the way the schematics work.

I would like to see WS quests to gain new schematics that are PERMENANT. And have the combay types EARN the certs to use the new weapons.

I find it rediculous that I can craft a weapon 2,3, or 5 times and then totally forget how to make it.

Cool system.

Not gonna happen, but cool system.
