Thread: New webpage to view current resources by item
Dazzla, This has a lot of potential. However it appears that you're taking the resources from current spawns, Foomans tool already does that. What would be helpful for me, and I'm sure, most newer WS that haven't been tracking spawns since day 0. Is be able to compare past spawns of resources. So that I know which one would be better to try to aquire. I can do this by manually entering the resources stats into foomans or by doing the math or making an educated guess based on the important attributes but it gets tough when there are a number of past spawns to compare.
For example on Kauri there hasn't been a spawn of Byrothsis Crystalline Gemstone in ages. However if yougo to Stun Baton it doesn't list the stats of the two different Byrothsis names (that SWG has) that have spawned on the server.
As far as Planet is concerned you might want tofilter out that info.I don't really care what planet the resource came from and if i'm going to harvest it I already have that info from Swg or from Foomans tool.
thanks,

PS No, not cookies Elthasar. Just a session variable - so if you return within 20 minutes to the site it'll still use the server you picked from before. If you visit after the session times out it'll default back to Infinity (my server lol )

Correct me if I'm wrong Idris, but it sounds like you want him to write you a program to tell you what resources you should use in crafting. Helping people is good and fine, but that almost goes to the point of doing their crafting for them. There is a small amount of skill and time required to know what is the best for a given schematic, why remove that? The computer shouldn't do all the thinking for you, that just makes the game boring and trivializes any "accomplishment" you achieve. Besides it is a good thing for someone who wants to be a weaponsmith to actually have to work at being a good one and not just have it handed to them on a silver plater. You appreciate something you work for much more than something you didn't.
By ths logic the advancements of the 20th century would never have happened. What we are talking about here has nothing to do with skill. It is simply knowledge. This particular knowledge would save most people a good deal of time. And I am not asking him to "write me a program" I am making suggestions as to how he can make his program more useful.
It's a moot point anyway. Unless you have a history of all the current resources over the last 8 months or so, you can't really do it anyway. From what I have read on SWGCraft.com, the only services he provides are adding resources and retrieving the latest ones. It doesn't seem to allow you to get historical data.
If you like handicapping yourself by not gathering all the data in a fast, efficient manner, that is your business. But you are really out of line when you tell me I have to get enjoyment out of the game by "putting in the time" to collect all that information about historical resources. Computers are our friends, they don't think for us, hell they don't even think last I checked. They are simply a large, sophisticated calculator. So go ahead anddo your math using paper and pen, but don't go around insisting that everyone else should.
If I could find the data archived somewhere I might write the program I described myself. Or maybe I should just suggest that Trokk adds this feature to the current schematics on SWGCrat. Currently when you click a resource listed in a schematic, it does not seem to sort the resources by the quality rating required by that schematic. With that simple fix this whole discussion would be moot.

Now that is just silly. The advancements of the 20th century are a completely different thing. This is a game not the real world.

The effect would be the same.

agreed. And some people have spent a great deal of time and effert to gain that knowledge. What they do with it is their perogative.

Who said I don't "gather all the data in a fast efficient manner?"
But you are really out of line when you tell me I have to get enjoyment out of the game by "putting in the time" to collect all that information about historical resources.
I'm out of line? Nope sorry, out of line would be demanding the information from others. You can get your enjoyment out of the game however you like. If you don't want to "put in the time" that is your perogative, but don't expect the benefits. I enjoy making some of the best weapons the game has seen. To get there I worked long and hard at it. Don't get me wrong, I'm always happy to help people. But I do think others should have to put in effort to get to the same point as I.

No computers do not think. But they run programs made by usthat can relieve us of the need to think. There comes a point sooner or later when it is the computer making all the decissions for us.At that point we are just watching the computer play the game. Different people draw that line at different places. I'm not "insisting on everyone using pen and paper" at all. I simple suggested that the computer shouldn't make all the decissions for you, are you insisting it should?

The tool would be easier to useif it rated the resources, can't dissagree there.

Actually you can retrieve quite a bit of historical data from swgcraft.com. It's very helpful in determining what was the best resource ever for a particular mineral. You just need to take the time to learn the site. For example the last high OQ spawn of Dolovite iron shifted out 122 days ago on corellia (radiant server).

Actually the data I meant was the stuff available to computer programs. I.E. the webservice and the XML data files that can be downloaded from:
http://swgcraft.com/resourceexport.php
These ONLY provide the current resources, so no history is available for programatic access at all. Unless I am mistaken and he provides some (rather large) data file for getting all of his historical data. What you see in his (rather nice I might add) web interface is only available in HTML, not the better structured XML or CSV forms like the current resources.
If anyone has been collecting these XML files on a regular basis and has a large library (let's say like 4 months) I would be willing to put in the effort to design a web page that would compare the current resource against the resource's history based on the experimentation ratings.
I will do some thinking about how I could make this most useful, if someone out there has the historical data I would need to do this, please pipe up!
First thoguhts are
- List any resources that are the "best-ever" for a schematic at the top of the page.
- List each schematic with its current resources and their stats along with a number for each resource showing its order in terms of rating. Thus a second best resource would be listed with a (2) so you know how it stacks up with the history at a glance.
- Have the history for any given resource type under a schematic in a collapsable list. You dont have to see the history if it's not important to you. Each of these would be listed in order and numbered from best to worst for that schematic.
- List the number of days since the resource type was last available to harvest. (note this is not the number of days of since a particular spawn, but since the last spawn)
- Flag any resource that has not spawned in over 30 days as a "RARE SPAWN"
- Possibly try to come up with a formula for a Miner's Rating of resources that takes into account,
- how long it has been since the resource spawned,
- how well the current resource compares to older ones,
- how many schematics it can be used in (this might be recursive). For example if a resource is used in a component like the Adv. Blaster Power Handler, this would mean it is used also in every schematic that uses this component.
Any other ideas? Please if you have historical resource data from SWGCraft.com let me know.

Now that part I really like.
It would definately be a big help to anyone who is new to any crafting profession and all those miners.
I don't maintain complete data on the old stuff though, Ijust track what is the best of each resource. I ignore the "crappy" stuff.
