Thread: Generic steel, why isn't the best the best?

The schematic asks for a generic steel for making the gun(50%CD/50%OQ) I tried a quadranium steel 534CD/999OQ=99.44%, and a duralloy steel 644CD/931OQ=96.09%. Why is the duralloy steel better?

It isn't the best generic steel that you can use. When it calls for generic steel it takes the cap of the best overall steel possible. Biocarbitic Steel has no caps therefore you need to look for the highest cd/oq period. Not just the best for that type.

Unfortunately here on Chilastra we haven't had a bicarbonate spawn that was better than our best duralloy, Erco

Hmm it would apear that the 50%CD/50%OQ is more like 100%OQ. Prob not how it was intended, but yet another bug that we'll have to deal with. Which weapon were you making?

Not sure about your server but yeah so far the best "best" generic steel I have is from shortly after JTL was released. Not sure if this has been surpassed since it spawned around 1 yr ago, maybe less I don't remeber exactly,but KIDE Hardened Arveshium spawned with 937cd/857oq. Luckily I have almost 600k units of this still in storage, I really only craft for my guild so my resources last forever.

And as the one poster said above, you can't compare one "named" steel in a generic steel schematic against another by the method you used since the JTL resources are uncapped (880ish sr copper anyone?? Although other servers have had close to 1000sr copper) so the cd on steel is 1-1000 instead of being gated to the specific "named" resource.

Thanks Tremorlaine, youare right. I just tried the best crystallized bicorbantium steel on my server 851CD/947OQ=89.9% and the green bar moved up a fraction more.

I'm wondering if you could help me with one more problem I have. I have a +25 Weapon Exp. CA with 2 other mods. Should I put it in a weaponsmith toolset or some gloves or something? If I put it in the toolset would it raise it to +28 weapon exp? Been afraid to use this thing.

Put it in another piece of clothing, all the mods will stick so you need something with 3 sockets. each mod takes up one socket.

Quadranium steel 534CD/999OQ = (534+999)/2 = 766.5... (766.5/1000) * 100= 76.65% of max

Duralloy steel 644CD/931OQ = (644+931)/2 = 787.5... (787.5/1000) * 100 = 78.75% of max

So for your 50% CD & 50% OQ schematic, your Duralloy is better by a bit over 2%.

Yeah... I'm still in a state of denial at having ground through 30k or so of Erco back when it first spawned...

So, they fixed that old bug with only the first mod sticking when there were multiple enhancements on one tape?

actually it looks like its excluding the bicobablahblah steel from the generics.. Generic steel caps at around what.. 700cd? I think it takes anything over the cap and just caps it. The calculations you're coming up with aren't correct. They look like they might have been correct in the old system though.

quadranium = ((534/700) * 0.5) + ((999/1000) * 0.5) = 87.95%

duralloy = ((644/700) * 0.5) + ((931/100) * 0.5) = 92.55%

the duralloy is better.

You need to remember quality is relative to the caps now (and know the proper way to calculate it ).

It has been a little tricky with these new resource weighting systems. I haven't checked it out much since they tweaked it again, but when resources were rated on the (stat-min)/(max-min) formula, I noticed something funny with the JTL resources. On Tempest, shortly after JTL we had a spawn a Crystalized Bicorbantium Steel (hereafter called CBS) called Esak with a CD of 988 and an OQ of 808, which made wonderful DL44 Metal blasters, among other things. With the first change, if a schem called for "steel," the (green) bar was actually a touch higher with a duralloy called Eihen (642 CD, 839 OQ). However, if a schem called for "ferrous metal," the CBS was actually a notch better than the Duralloy.

Withthe firstchange, my Phrik (Ikewite) sucked, so I found a better one (but I had one of the best ones!) and (sleepy at the time) put my old stock up for sale. With the new change, it had sold before I had logged back in, so I can only assume it is the better one again. I've been so disgusted since (I've been beta'd in a live game! C'mon devs, get it together! Oh wait, not the dev's fault they were rushed! So who gets hung for this debacle?) that I really haven't been crafting after the new change to see how the 2 steels compare now.

As for copper for melee weapons, I noticed no difference (green bar maxed) between my 800 SR polysteel copper or the 880 SR JTL copper.
