It appears that shield generators have been dramatically improved. They now decay at a much lower rate, so they last long enough to actually be worth buying. Evidently you can get up to 50% energy resistance from an MK3 shield, which stacks with armor. Initial reports indicate that it's relatively easy to set it up so you're taking about 20% of normal energy damage. Or 5% of regular PvE damage. A 1000 point shot would only hit for 50.

However, shield gens don't protect from kinetic damage, meaning that once the 50% MK3 shields become standard in PvP (as they surely will once they're ramped up), net kinetic damage will be roughly double netenergy damage.

Of course, it's all theory at this point, but it's something to think about.

Atleast it would be nice to have a shield when hunting npcs useing ranged weapons, like imperial/rebel missions.

This is untrue. Shield gens (even MkI) are AR1. So against a non-armor piercing weapon, you automatically get 50% less dmg. On top of that, shield gen's DO have resistance against kinetic. Read the statistics.

Depends how well made the shield is and if the crafter got a lucky 'roll'.

Some don't have kinetic absorption, some do. Make sure to check details before making the purchase.
