The mind-pool price you pay for using specials is based on your Focus. If you have a very low focus (due to armor or whatever), you'll pay a high mind price for using specials.
Muon gold is good, but personally I can't take the downer. I've found that Grey Gabki gives you a good Focus boost (reduction of HAM costs), and the downer doesn't hurt as much. Just a personal preference.

If you are using VKs it will drastically. Really don't use specials with VKs
Only choices you have are try and max your focus (ham use) and willpower (ham regen). Personally I found the usually 200 range I had on these did not make that much difference, but I have them set high as Iam a medic as well.
Or use spices, but not sure if they have fixed them yet. The downer can be bad if you have low stats when it kicks in.
If it is with VKs find a powerup (or crate of them) that lower the mind cost usage. You can replenish health and action with stimpacks if you have novice medic.
Also I have noticed that even without VK's the mind usage varies on specials. Not sure if it is related to how you have yourstrength and quickness set, but it seems the higher these are the lower the mind cost is. But I usually have a Doc buff on these so they are anywhere between 1000 and 2500, depending on how the buff went. I usually see anything between7 and 25 mind costs using UH2 with the other stats buffed up.
