A TKA has no problems 'tanking' at higher levels even without a pet. You'll do fine. That is, as long as your pet stays put. I've seen pets run away pulling the mob with them for no apparent. It gets quite annoying as a melee.

It works very well, but the bugs that plague the creature handler profession are even more annoying for a melee (particularly creatures melee-kiting each other).

A more serious problem is that the build you indicated you wanted would require 290 skill points.

I for one will most definately say, being a TKA/CH is counter productive. Your wasting some 90 or so points to do exactly what your class is there to do itself.. Tank.

Being a TKA/Commando is awesome, I can actually be my own pet. Whip out the heavy weapons to do some serious dmg, then unequip and go tka once I get the agro on me, every now and then pop out of the agro land some more commando on them.

But TKA/CH ??? Why??

For starters by being a TKA your going to negate the effect your pets are there to provide... aka "meatshields". Even often as a pistoleer if your too close when you send your pets in, the agro comes after you the CH instead. This is even more so the case as a TKA. So if your really the one taking the hits and not hte pets... what are the pets there for??

Reality is, pets don't make very good weapons. Considering your average pistoleer can land 1k - 1.5k dmg shots every second, it seems kinda silly to depend on the 200 - 300dmg your pet will do every 2 seconds. Ask yourself how many times you sent your pet in for the kill and just sat back and watched without firing a shot... In other words let the pet DO ALL THE WORK. It doesn't happen. Because pets suck for dmg. A rancor seemed to me the only pet that did a decent enough dmg to let him do his own work. So if not for dmg, and if not for taking hits?? What are the pets for?

I've heard the argument that pets land stat effects.... Sure they do..... but as a TKA your full of them, and you can fire them off once per second consistently. It's a crapshoot as to whether a pet will use they're specials or stat effects. Considering as a TKA you already have plenty, it seems like a total waste of 90 some points to do what you are already capable of. Let me tell you people.... 90 skill points is not worth going CH for the stat effects creatures do. Perhaps with the upcoming changes, and the ability to get pets to do they're specials on command, pets may be worth more.

But as of today in the here and now, it's entirely counter productive. Get a profession that will actually compliment your TKA skills. Having pet tanks isn't complimenting a TKA. Just adding to what a TKA already does, and does better than a pet.

I am a master TKA/CH/Scout with some Ranger Tracking (and no more skill points). I have really enjoyed the TKA/CH combination. I find pets to be a great help when soloing a group of Imp NPCs--the pets keep one or two of them occupied while I beat one down, then I just go after the next one. Without the pets I would probably be incapped by blaster fire from the mobs I am not meleeing.

The other thing is being a CH is a lot of fun. I love roaming Dath, Dant, and Endor in particular looking for babies to tame. This is going to only get better with the storage limit of 20 for MCH and the re-introduction of some really badass pets like the arachnae and the opportunity to catch a rare Frenzied Graul or Rancor.

I can tank one or two or maybe 3 dark troopers, but it is a whole lot easier with a couple of Graul Maulers (or whatever I will be using after the CH changes) to chase the extra ones around until I am ready to whack them. I just finished the part two rebel mission today, and I am glad I had my 2 GSPs and 1 GW on my side when I had to take out 6 troopers to send that final message....

So if you enjoy CH and melee, I think it is a great combination. There is no right or wrong here--after all, the idea is to have fun, no?

I'd like to drop CH for another Melee type maye Swordsman or Pikeman but as it stands i can't get decent missions alone and with the hours i work my play time is usually on a fearly empty server so grouping becomes difficult

First off, I have read a very good TKA faq, and it provided allot of insight, although I am still not sure of the path to go...

I am working up the unarmed tree, and am looking at TKA. I am either going to go towards Commando or TKA. I just dropped BH the other day(was tired of the 9,999,999 BH's) and frankly, the elitist attitude(acording to that community, you are not a BH, unless you go up in investigation), was getting old. I am a casual player, and I am looking for an effective/fun profession combination.

Currently, I am a 3 3 1 3 CH, and with the upcoming CH changes, I will probably go master there. I like novice medic, to fix up myself and creatures, and I like a small amount of PvP, but do not need to be the "Uber" pvp god.

I see myself as...

CH - Master

Marksman - Master

Medic - a little bit for reduced downtime

TKA master...

Now I am not sure if a TKA/CH combo works well. Gaining unarmed xp now, with my mauler out seems to be somewhat counter productive. I am used to using creatures to tank, then adding on damage with a combat class. With unarmed, even at unarmed III, I seem to easily take agro away from my pet.

Basically, does a CH/TKA combo work?
