Thread: ANY reason for a TK to group for Missions with other ranged players ?

I've been having a very frustrating time trying to group with my friends in SWG. Now, I admit that they are all ranged classes ( one Commando, one Smuggler, and One Rifleman) which means that I expect them to be able to pound on things before I can get to them but it's just ridiculous. 80% of the time they will kill the MOB before I can even reach it and if I do manage to get in a hit or two, I get very little xp (because I am only doing a little damage before the thing drops dead). If I try to be far enough ahead so that I can get in to combat with the MOBs at the same time as my group, I'm usually 44-64 meters a head of the group and therefore get killed by other MOBs which aren't even visible to the rest of my group. With no real 'Group XP', there seems to be little or no reason for a TK to group with other players.

The MOST frustrating thing about this problem is that the answer that 100% of the 'Helpers' have given me (admittedly that's only 5 out of 5) was that TKs "aren't Tanks" and that we should "Buy pets and send them in first, followed by the TK, and then have the Ranged people attack". *sigh* Ok, so other then playing my TK like a CH,is thereANY reason for a TK to group for Missions with other Ranged players ?

I've grouped several times with hunting parties consisting of 8 or more ranged and myself being the only melee. And you know what? I freaking pwn the mobs and NPCs.

I'm used as the tank and find that having ranged friendlies, makes the XP to damage ratio far more efficient for me. I'm still a 0/0/3/1 TKA, but you can ask anyone on the Eclipse server who has grouped with me; they like having a up-close and personal combatant.

you may not be attackin tough enough mobs for your group then....

pets dont do nearly as much damage as you do and if you are attaking mobs that can be taken out by the ranged in just a few seconds then that is a clear indication that you need to move on to some harder stuff...

then again if your spread is 0/1/1/1 and you are grouping with a BH against worrts...well that's another issue altogether

Sounds like you guys are taking on really easy mobs because even in a group of 5 or 6, I end up having to rescue ranged people from being beat up ALL the time. If you are 0/1/1/1 a good place to hang out is Yavin 4. I soloed there at that level and grouped efficiently as well.

Yah, the ranged users I group with beg me to go with them when they hunt or they don't survive. And I get exp cap on each mob unless I'm running around trying to taunt adds because one of the ranged people didn't listen.

Try some harder stuff

Melee with ranged support is very effective in faction missions. If your riflemen engage their rifleman to keep them busy, you can run up to them and pop them for 4000 damage in one hit (depending on your skills). That has a way of ending fights fast. On occasion terrorist npc's will charge with melee weapons, at which point your ranged people need to switch to melee until you can peel off their attacker.

If you are grouped with someone who insists on kiting their opponents rather than stand still and let you kill them, teach them by not chasing them around. If they move at all they should be dragging the npc closer to you, not away. Some people have a hard time learning how to fight in a group after spending most of their careers solo.

Sounds like your fighting mobs way to low for your group. I hunt regularly with my guild and when I'm the only melee and the rest are ranged, we take mobs that they cannot do without me. I taunt all mobs to me, intimidate them, Stun/Blind/Dizzy them, heal myself occationally and rake in the exp. They (the ranged and CH'ers) rant and rave about the great exp they are getting (around 1k per mob for both weapon exp and CH exp) and I laugh under my breath at the 4-5k per mob exp I get for Unarmed. Plus they die reasonably fast so the exp rolls.

Without me pulling for them and taunting mobs to me, they would have to send in pets and aggro the whole lot at once, or tag from range and die very quickly if their pets don't intercept.

The trick to assisting a big group as a melee is to be the puller and take mobs they can't kill easily, quickly or without you. Everyone benefits.

P.S. I hit TKM and MCH on the same day (Saturday) so now exp doesnt matter to me. Last night with the same bunch of guys I pulled, Intimidated, and taunted all mobs to me, but fought without knuckles and spammed taunt or intimidate (to lessen my attacks) when we got solo mobs. I was getting 500ish Unarmed and the rest were suddenly getting 2-3 times the exp they normally got. They loved me , but again, without me, they would have had a hard time with that high of mobs. That is the key, fight mobs that they can't fight without you. Only a melee with intimidate can stand upto mobs that would hit a ranged for 200-300 a pop. They only hit me for 50ish once I Intimidate and stun them and miss 50% of the time with blind.

Really, it's all about eduating the ranged members of the party on what your function in the group is. Once they are properly taught and you are fighting Mobs close to your groups level, the experience will come quickly. I leveled from novice to master in pretty much the same group of friends, and we got a system down.

1. fight, exclusivley if possible, aggressive Mobs

2. the ranged people lay in wait with pets at the ready as you approach the Mob furthest away from the others.

3. Let the Mob aggro you

4. Run back to your waiting group, make sure that you are far enough from the lair so that other mobs won't be attracted to the scuffle and by all means-- stay in front of the group so it doesn't aggro another member.

5. Intimidate at 20m, knockdown, stun, blind, dizzy (if humanoid) while your group lays into it with blaster fire

6. Repeat 1 thru 5 until mobs are gone.

7. On spawning lairs- let the person that has the least exp do the tapping

Remember thatthe experience you receive forkilling a mob is adjusted by the number of boxes you have filled for yourparticular attack style (themaximum potential exp) AND the amount of damage done to the target. The second part is important, if your ranged buddies are higher in skill and do more damage you will not get very good exp. To maximize your exp, make sure that you are more skilled than anyone in your group and fight dark dark blue mobs.

Here is a suggestion...

  1. Get Novice Medic skills.

  2. Go buy a crate of stim B's and put them in your backpack.

  3. Hotbutton heal.

  4. Max out all mind stats.

  5. Buy some decent armor.

  6. Get armor sliced for reduced HAM costs

  7. Hotbutton all armor so you can swap it out quickly

  8. Got to Yavin 4, southern camp (there is a TKA trainer there).

  9. Hunt Mamians until they stop giving good xp.

  10. Keep hides and use to get better armor down the road.

  11. Hunt on Dantioone at Imperial Outpost.

  12. Learn how to solo pull reds.

  13. Hunt the Huurons (I think, can't remember what they are called).

  14. Stay there until you hit master TKA.

Only group with friends or to be social for a while. Its usually just slower experience anyway and less cash. Learn to solo pull reds and your value to a group increases significantly in places like Endor. They will need someone or something to tank these guys and as long as you have a healer to keep you alive, it should be fine.

This is just an option...
