Thread: idea for meditation revamp

i originally posted this in the tk combat revamp thread, but wasnt quite sure thats where it belonged. it seems that now would be a time to bring it up, since the devs are gathering opinions for the combat/profession revamp, and ive always felt this way about teras kasi in swg, so here goes...

meditation xp should be gained by meditating, not combat.

it could work something like xp gained based on time spent meditating, but to make it less uniform, certain locations could be meditation "hot spots" which increase the rate of meditation xp. these areas could be tied to certain of the more mystical poi's and locations, giving them a broader purpose than they currently have. the process could also vary based on ones meditative ability (level), giving more meaning to "+15 meditate". it would also providemany opportunities to define adivision between teras kasi mystics(just meditation line) and teras kasi masters or combatants.

xp variables couldbe verysubtle, while enriching many aspects of the teras kasi experience. for example, meditating in a busy city would be more difficult, ie yield less xp, for beginner meditators than meditating somewhere more tranquil such as near a lake. at master teras kasi, you could meditate anywhere with full benefit (to give the tkm a meditation advantage). just an idea. it would certainly add to the immersion level of the profession, and would seem to help add color and variation to the environment. not to mention that having to go to remote, interesting places to gain xp seems a lot more exciting and immersing than killing a few thousand more huurton howlers.

on a side note, i think this change to the meditation line would benefit the game as a whole, beyond just the teras kasi profession, by allowing the playerbase to have access to the "spiritual" life that is implicit in so much of swg lore. for a 35 skill point investment, any player can embark upon the path of meditation, providing combat and healing benefits regardless of the rest of their template. sure, this option is available now, but as the system currently exists, the path of meditation is meaningless beyond the acquisition of unarmed combat xp.

wouldnt it be great to have something to do once youve fought your way to the bottom of the spidercave on dathomir? wouldnt it add to the mystique of the poi to have someone meditating down there?

a new system would provide mystique to the world around us, while adding color to the galaxies experience to even the non-meditator. wouldnt it be cool to see a couple teras kasi meditating at the foot of the misty falls on dathomir as you swing by to collect the poi badge? it would certainly give you a sense that the area had some mystical or healing property that they would not have gotten otherwise.

i feel it would certainly be worth the time to code this change into the professions/combat revamp, benefitting the entire game, as well as the teras kasi profession.

but they wouldnt be affecting bandwidth very much if there was a significant reason to meditate in wilderness locations. afk advertisers and entertainers are a problem because they are doing so in high traffic areas, where bandwidth is precious. also, with a variety of potential locations you will not be likely to see too many afk meditators in any one location.

things could be done to discourage afk meditation as well, such as having the meditation xp gain stop if meditation is interrupted by something such as combat. there are many possibilities.

Na. Meditation dabbling isn't a big deal if you ask me. I'm pretty much all dabble except TKM. There are about 50 billion other issues that I'd rather see givin attention to first.

I thought the NGE couldn't be any worse than the CU, but I was wrong.

Basically youre saying we need to sit down, and do nothing while we gain meditation XP. Wed become the next AFK profession overnight. It just doesnt seem like much fun sitting there in one spot meditating just to get XP.

I understand the concept, and even agree that it makes sense. However, it does pose problems with the ability to then AFK the experience, regardless of how you try to limit its ability to be AFK'd.

For example, if you present a time limit on how long you can meditate before the XP caps (like Wilderness Survival with camps) then people will simply make a Macro that makes them stand for a moment, and then start meditating again.

Now, the idea of having meditation "hot-spots" so-to-speak is an interesting one. These could still be looked at without changing the way we gain experience in the tree, and could instead be particular places that convey an additional bonus when meditating in that area. For example, the Blue-Leaf Temple on Yavin could add additional time to powerboost when meditating there due to the spiritual nature of the temple. If we want to pursue something of that nature then we would need to come up with a list of potential places and potential benefits.

In short, I like the idea of possible "hot spots," but not of changing the experience type.

No longer holding out hope, SWG will never be the game we fought so hard for, that we believed so much in. Farewell friends.

I've got to agree withIawo - there's nothing wrong with meditation as it stands. Even relatively minor gripes like an alternate damage type or a new knucker are far more immediate than changing meditation.

I've got to say, being a TKM and Smuggler, it's amazing how good a state Teras Kasi is in comparison to Smuggling. I find it a breath of fresh air to have a profession that is well balanced and pretty well designed. I think playing around with meditation is trying to fix something that isn't broken.
