Pets usually fight within 3m. With your VKs on you'll auto attack at 5m. Take your VKs off an you'll auto attack at 6m.
It's basically a game of find the sweet spot where the enemy aggros on your pet more than you.

For holo's, I Mastered Fencer. For the most part, I could attack from farther away than my pets, and thus, almost never got hit.
Now, Im starting on the path of the TKA. It seems that I have to get very close in order to attack, and thus, usually get the brunt of the damage. Being a MCH, I usually go unbuffed, since I usually didnt get hit.
So, is a pets range of attack generally greater than a TK? If so, I can then basically just drop CH and get buffs 24/7
Thanks for any info.

also depends on what pet you use. make sure you have the pet out that needs to be close. i think i used cats most of the time.
