i've heard it lessens the dmg you take & i've also heard it makes your opponent miss more. does anyone know 100% sure?

I'm ALMOST 100% sure that it just lessens the amount of damage you take from melee opponents

It *does not* lessen the amount of damage you take, only toughness does that. Here is a run down on what the defensive mods do:

Melee/Ranged Defense - Anti-accuracy. The higher your mod in these, the more likely an attack is to completely miss you. The counter to high melee/ranged defense is the accuracy mod. When two people attack each other, it compares your defense to their accuracy, determines the chance of you getting hit, then rolls to see if you do get hit or not.

Block/Counter Attack/Dodge/Defensive Accuity- These are avoidance defenses. If your melee/ranged defense fails, and you do get "hit" think of these as a second chance. The higher your mod in these the higher your chance of "avoiding the damage" or "countering the damage" you take from the hit. It is worth noting Defensive Accuity works, however the strength of the mod is incredibly weak. So much so, in fact, that you will rarely notice it working.

Center of Being - This is a special brawler profession defense enhancement. What it does is temporarily boost the strength of your Block/Dodge/etc mods.

Defense vs X - These are pretty straigh forward defenses versus states, poisons, etc. They simply increase the chance of you avoiding having these states and such applied to you.

Toughness - toughness is like innate armor. It reduces the damage you take. So if you have 57 unarmed toughness, then any melee attacks that hit you have their damage reduced by 57%. The professions with toughness mods are all the brawler professions and Jedi.

Jedi are forced to rely only on their toughness and force powered defenses. All Brawler based toughness reduces any "melee" damage we recieve. Jedi have two toughness types: Lightsaber toughness which is exactly like brawler toughness, and Jedi toughness which works for all damage(ranged and melee) except it does not protect against Lightsaber damage.

It is also worth noting that there is a +dodge chef food. This food does not increase the dodge mod, instead it acts as a melee/ranged defense booster.

Edit: Forgot to add a defense mod:

Melee/Ranged Mitigation - These mods shrink the damage range of the weapon being used against you. They do this by lowering the max damage while leaving the minimum damage alone. They do not stack anlthough you can have both melee and ranged mitigation active and working at the same time. Simply, the highest melee and ranged mitigations you have are the ones that are active and are always on. The amount they shrink the damage range is 20% for mitigation 1, 40% for mitigation 2, and 60% for mitigation 3. As such, against a weapon with a small damage range, they will not do much, but against a weapon with a huge damage range(like a T-21 for example) they have quite an impact.

Excellent post Utess! I was kind of wondering what the Damage Mitigation did...
