In my experience, the ability to get a breather for up to 40 seconds in a duel thanks to concussion shot is very useful. Feign Death is also very good to escape death in PvE. The smuggler dirty fighting tree has, contrary to all other profs, even unarmed mods, and it gives you more variety and options than a pure melee template.

Its not good. Melee side you got low damage, high action. Even with the katarn, its not that great. Range side you got low speed, acc, def. CoB can't be turned on with range weapon.
You can get equal to or better skills using the sp's to buy other melee boxes.

Don't get smuggler when you want a "good" and powerfull template, only when you want a fun template with some crafting in it and of course slicing and stuff. I does give you some nice tka mods with it, but I think you can get more powerfull when taking other melee professions next to tka.

But with smuggler you at least have some ranged punch, and a bag of tricks.

I'm a MTK/4004 Sword/MSmuggler and I do around 1100 damage to lvl 87 npcs and animals. I would say it works for a combo

if ya want to be the uberest...not the way to go.
but...
If ya want variety , rp, or just good utility ...go for it
You have options...such as..
-Off tank in a group
-Mez when things start to go wrong
-Damage dealer with a bit of swords in ya temp
-pull aggro off the main, then mez or feign death if it starts to go too badly
-great income...if ya not a bleedin heart smuggler
-ya look cool cause ya get ta wear what ya want when ya want via BE'd clothing
the list goes on...you'll never be the one taking all the damage or doing the most damage...but you be able to adjust to the situation on the fly
