Thread: TKM OVERPOWERED? AN HONEST LOOK BASED ON THE GENRE OF THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE

I hear a lot of whining from both sides of the GCW about the other side being nothing but tkms. I hear a lot of whining about tkms being too powerful. I have done some crying (not whining crying is to yourself, whining is to otheres lol) of my own after a heavy dose of ass whuppin at the hands of a TKM. In real life I am a former US Marine infantryman-a Martial arts instructor with over 20yrs of experience -and a die hard star wars geek. With that said here is how I look at it. A Tkm should hand you your ass at point blank-period. A unarmed master of any martial art at close range is deadly , and the human body alone, two hands and feet working in combined perfect unison , is faster than any melee weapon and more presise that close than any firearm. Now tkm vrs a melee weapon the weapon should do much more damage. Flesh and bone are not durasteel. The real problem I see is that a tkm should not be able to best a ranged weapon profession one on one if the ranged player id=s good , plays smart , and gets off a few shots first-preferrably disrupting the tkms pools or setting him on fire. Just as it is realistic for a tkm to dominate in close quarter combat , it is not realistic to burn a tkm or mindshot him over and over as he wades through it and knock down dizzys you. I have personally flame singled a unbuffed tkm 4 times , getting the first 3 off before he got to me , and be killed by him.

the main point though is not realism, but fantasy. The star wars movies , books ,cartoons , grafic novels , ect all have one thing in common. This is an age of laser weapons and ion blasters. To have that universe dominated , and argue all you want tkms it is dominated, by martial artists is not consistent with the concept that is associated with sthe star wars saga.

It is plain silly. In all of our history on earth at no time did unarmed fighting ever superceed armed combat in effectiveness. Disagree? Well here ae dome important facts. Muy Thai, arguably the worlds most brutal and effective martial art, was developed for thai pike man in the middle ages. Metal weapons were rare in that part of the world at that time. So you had small soldiers armed with 10 to 12 foot pikes that wouldget tangled up after the initial contact between battle lines. Since they had no secondary weapons and thier primary was tied up they used what the could ; thier head, shins and elbows-the birth of muy thai. Karate was developed to help condition okinawan peasants to wage armed warfare against the japanese. Since the japanese outlawed all weapons for okinawans during thier occupation-the training began unarmed and later incorporated simple tools as weapons. The art incorporated the empty hand aspects into the overall art -but it was a supplement to armed combat. Tae kwon do was the conditioning that trained korean footsoldiers the proper block and strile positions of short sword and round shield, as well as how to dismount calvary mounted on ponies with jump kicks. Once again the unarmed benefits were secondary-only in modern martial arts has the focus shifted to unarmed dominance.

While on the subject we could delve into the boxer rebellion in early 20th century China. The boxers believed that chineese boxing would defeat the europeans and thier technology. During the attack on the British embassy, where all the americans and europeans in the city had fled to make thier final stand-the superiority of firearms was the most aparrent in all of history. US Marine pfc Dan Daly killed over 1000 chineese boxers from the wall with a browning watercooled machine gun. daly won the first of his two medals of honor there.

All this rambling has a point, Tkms should be deadly. Hell two tkms and I as a master commando kiled two dark jedi masters in one day on dant by using thier warcry to delay him. But in a age of galactic travel-superstardestroyers, super flamethrowers, proton grenades, lightsabers, vibro weapons , kimos and rancors and blasters- a spacefaring kung fu master should not reign absolutely surpreme.

By those standards Jedi should be useless in game also. After all, they just use a lightsaber and the force, which means they need to be close also.

Overall, you are correct in your references and I see where you are coming from, but this is a game and RL doesn't have to count here.

You are correct about guns should be able to dominate...and they do in PVP. I get killed all the time by ranged, but on a battlefield when things are hectic it's quite easy for a melee to jump on a ranged person. It's pretty much 50/50 when you have about 30+ people fighting. I have had rifleman/carbineers/pistoleers take me out before i even made it to the front...other times i am able to get into the mix and do some damage. That's how it is supposed to work.

Actually an unarmored, unbuffed TKA will get one-shotted by a rifleman, if the rifleman hits. If not, the TKA will probably break his neck. There's your realism.

Since we don't have energy-bolt resistant armor IRL, nor do we have doctor buffs in the sense we have in the game, nor do we have the equivalentof 50-cal rifles capable of strafingfire, you can see where this changes.

...when you get down to brass tacks, the TKA is toast vsa gun. It's all this other SCIFI stuff that makes it different.

Gee...Scifi makes things different than reality...wow.

Ok, nice post and i almost agree completely.

I agree with the responses to date and let me add my own along the same lines.

There are a few things I could do with understanding a little better though, are you trying to say that a Teras Kasi is the most powerfull profession in the galaxy and should be toned down ? Or are you saying there are too many of us around ?

I would say in an RPG respect what you are saying is 100% correct and TKA wouldn't be the dominant fighting force at all given that everyone has increadibly powerfull weaponry at their disposal, but we don't really have a choice in how many people choose to take the TKA path and therefore can't decide how many people should be using this skill to hold with the 'mood' of the game. Unfortunate indeed..

Saying that TKA is too powerfull because he was unbuffed , you hit him three times with a flamer and he still took you down.. I don't think I can go for that unless you go for this.. I'm sure that a commando can kill a TKA , and I'm sure a TKA can kill a commando.. He took you down because perhaps you assumed he would die , and therefore didn't put as much effort into taking him down as you might have done if you thought your life was on the line ?

Yeah - Ok, setting a guy on fire with three shots from a huge flamethrower is enough to put anyone down, one is.. But what I think should be done perhaps is to make the commando's flamer much more effective against an attacker, and given that a flame thrower isn't as fast as a bullet and we are spacefaring kung fu masters after all , we should maybe be able to outmanouver your flamer better than other professionsbut if you hit with it.. We are toast in no time at all, but so is everyone else.. Also of course if your on fire its unlikely you would be able to see, concentrate, aim, speak, or do anything but try to run to the person who set you on fire screaming "NYaaaaaarRrgHh!" and trying to set him on fire with your own burning body..

Realistic is good, very good.. So instead of making a TKA more vunerable to attacks because we dont have a weapon, why not make a commando have a more powerfull flamethrower with less accuracy, fuel consumption, and which can toast any profession in no time at all to maintain realism..? You could even say if the player you toasted was on fire and they ran into your fuel pack for long enough, you both go down in a blaze of glory.. hehe.

So, I know that this post will probably get 'flamed' (heh) but YES that's right I am saying make the commando more powerfull with that weapon because it didn't kill someone as quick as it 'should'. But that doesnt mean TKA should get anything but a bonus against the flamer, we still take the damage we still go down the same as the others.. But when it comes to being nimble and getting out of situations with little more than a singed lekku or two .. We should be more capable than others, but not so much that it becomes unrealistic and you cant hit us.

Also given that people are aware that the commando has a powerfull and dangerous weapon when he gets out his flamer, armoursmiths could of course start churning out suits of fire resistant armour.. If you look at the movies (any), we have the technology to make a pretty bulky suit now that we can use to set people on fire for stunts - In the day of , etc , they should have something much lighter, and more effective.. We even have a gell which means you can be set on fire for a while without taking any serious burns..

I think really I could debate the potency of a weapon and its capabilities in battle, and also the possible resistances for hours and neither side may come to a conclusion.. But I have to say you made a decent post, I agree with almost everything you said but at the same time I just hope you werent saying that TKA should be taken down a notch, cos I think if you proved anything its that commandos should be taken up a notch.

(and for the boy who cried NERF who reads this, I also said about the possability of resists, if your not smart enough to get out your fireproof KY and apply it before going into battle with a commando you deserve to die a horrible crispy death in your bone armour)

PS : Sorry about the long posts, I always do it.. But i try not to pad them with crap.. So gimme a break a little.

I see the point, but in trying to make the game playable and enjoyable for all, regardless of whether youprefer a ranged or melee style, we have what we have. For myself I see good balance. If I find myself in combat with a ranged opponent at range, I am most often killed if I cannot close into melee range. If I can get my opponent distracted enough not to notice that I am getting close, then I can usually win. Both TKA and ranged need to keep foremost in their minds what their effective ranges are. To me this is balance.

Now if we were to take the position that we want realism as most people know it from the movies and real life, all players would, 95% of the time, be killed by a single blaster shot that landed in main body mass. Pick any of the movies and watch the armored troopers fall from single shots. There are hundreds of examples. I actually prefer that, and am used to that kind of action in prior games, but you would have to agree that most people agree that being able to take 4-10 blaster hits makes more of a battle. We operate this way, totally unrealistically and totally against the culture of Star Wars, because this is a game and no one wants to be out of the action in the first shot.

Actually, if you watch really closely, you don't see dead storm trooper bodies laying around in the first 3 flicks. Why? Cuz they were only KDd. The armor is working.

Too bad it sucks wind in the game.

nice post sunstone. always good to get an informed perspective on the martial arts, seeing as it seems that the melee profs were implemented without any real working knowledge of the fighting styles.

however, as for the history of the martial arts that you outlined, you should keep in mind that unarmed training may accompany a soldiers training, which focuses more on weapon use, yet this doesnt account for higher levels of the martial art in which the body weapon can become superior to the melee object weapon.

soldiers are not trained with mastery in mind. mastery perhaps over a small set of skills, but nothing approaching the breadth of mind/body control one attains in mastery of a martial art. further, from a historical perspective most soldiers were little more thanlightly trained and armed fodder, and as such they were given the skills that were most effective with the least amount of mastery- hence, armed combat.

im not saying thattoday'ssoldiers are not highly trained and effective, justthat from a historical perspective certain types of weapons (mainly polearms and forms of long knives) were favored for troops over unarmed combat due to the relative difficulty inturning the human body into a killing machine comparedto a stick with ablade at the end of it.

it seems to come down to a question of artistry and utility: weapons skills are easier to use at lower levels while the body weapon requires much more training/conditioning to become effective with. while it is interesting to note that teras kasi are the only combat prof in the game to receive any indication of artfulness in their titles, it is still sad that mastery of any elite prof ultimately requires the same amount of skill points and ends up, in a sense, no better than any other, thus making allelite combat prof masteries about on par with each other... at least in terms of skill points. for game mechanics, it seems that anyrange of combat should be the most superior at that range. which, with a few notable exceptions (cough... rifleman) seems to be the way it is. a melee prof, at melee range, will kick ranged butt. big time.

however, this brings up an interesting omission from the gcw: friendly fire. while the melee profhas to use tactics to use theirstyle (ie, getting in melee range), ranged combat lacks any necessity for tactics other than staying within a rather sizeablerange and maintaining line of sight. this hinders group encounters greatly, in that aranged combatant has no worry of hitting any of his teammates withhis fire. there is nonecessary careinvolved in a bunch of rifleman strafe-firing their way through a battle. or concern for who got hit by the bullet thatmissed your target. at no point does the ranged combatant need to make use of anysort of caution when firing their weapon, greatly reducing the real life limitations ofprojectile weapons.

as an ex-marine im sure you are aware of the things you cant dowhen travelling in a unit usingranged weapons, for fear of harming your own troops. none of these limitiations exist in swg for ranged attacks. you just simply cant hit your teammate. the devs seem so concerned about people spamming their attacks, yet they do nothing about friendlyfire. ifplayers had to actually beresponsible for who got hit with each shot, ranged combat would change dramatically. spamming shots would decrease dramatically, as would the lack of tactics necessary for battle in swg.

i say, for every cry to nerf tka, we should respond with a cry for the inclusion of friendly fire.

Folks, why must you keep talking about 'star wars genre' and then compare Teras Kasi artists
to tae kwon do, shotokan, gung-fu, or any other martial artist from planet earth?

TK artistsare trained to neutralize JEDI MASTERS.

TK artistsare trained to neutralize JEDI MASTERS.

TK artistsare trained to neutralize JEDI MASTERS.

Everyone understand this now?

I am a TKD 6-year black belt and I'm only trained to neutralize other normal guys who try to hurt me. I never had a lesson on how to break a light saber handle with my heel and then whip a force-user's @ss with unarmedhit3.

Teras Kasi users are able to manipulate the force internaly. This allows them to heal themselves through meditation and it allows them to inflict incredible amount of damage with thier body. They are notwhat we think of as karateka. They are not real. They are superhuman.

I agree that ranged attacks reigned supreme in the movies, but there were no Teas Kasi masters in the movies either. So who's to say what would have happened. Also, light saber users were much more powerful than the pistol and carbine users they went up against. Teras Kasi are trained specifically to take out light saber users, so by'movie logic':

JediandTeras Kasi > ranged weapon user

What do Teras Kasi artists have to do with the Boxer Revolution? There were no Jedi there and there were no Teras Kasi artists. My guess is that a lot of normal martial artists got gunned down by a lot of normal machine gun fire. That doesn't sound very difficult.

Apples and force sensitive apples, my friend.

Now that that's out of the way, if you'd like to talk pure game mechanics and balance go right ahead. And, yes, in light of the weak states of several other professions, TK does seem overpowered from a game balance standpoint, not a genre-breaking standpoint.

Any comparison of Teras Kasi and anything is "is questionable as to it's authenticity" and should not be considered in lieu of hard numbersand howthose numbersaffect game balance. What people think they are supposed to "be" is a moot point.

And when you use the quote function, please have it contain an actualquote lest you damage your credibility.

Hehe good posts here :}

But remember how masy times Luke or Han was shot at by trained storm troopers? (I lost count)

But did they ever hit them?

Hmm they must have dabbled in fencer a bit to make the UBER PVP movie template.

All and all TKA is a very ballanced class when it comes to PVP. That is to say a "Pure" TKA that doe not have any other skills effecting the outcome.

I hope they leave it alone and fix Pikeman for god sakes.
