I have been trying to live up to my role in groups as the tank. Taunt gets the mobs attention but only briefly, however, I noticed if I heal somebody else that seems to really peeve the mob and he comes back to me for a lot longer. Just a thought for those of you trying to gain the aggro.

That's why I'm TKM / Master Swords / Doc 4xxx. Healing yourself also produces agro, as long as you actually do healing. Plus area taunt from Swords rocks. I'm an agro machine. Once something is on me, it's on me for good.

I am TKM/MS as well, but 0440 pike.
I don't understand how you are holding aggro, it's my biggest issue as well.
Taunt sucks, and area taunt isn't a good idea if there is a lot of high level mobs in the range.
Healing SHOULDN'T draw massive aggro the way it does. I think that is what is doing it for you.

Taunt brings them to you, but you need to hit them to keep them interested in you. Spin Attack from Pikeman makes this easy. When i tank i forget about damage dealing and concentrate on switching my target continually, as creatures move away, taunt them, then hit them.
Also you need to make sure if a ranged person (usually the medic) gets an agro he brings it within your range so you can get it back. if you chase after it you will lose some of those on you and that defeats the purpose.

Easy.
Do not group with clueless ranged damage dealers that do not understand that they have to give you a "headstart" on the mob for you to generate some hate. If your group doesn't know this, explain it to them, if they STILL don't follow this principle /leavegroup and find yourself people with a clue to play with
Use taunt and areataunt every time it is avail for you, use damage-attacks for the time "in between" (which ones, depends on the template, in my case pikeman's spinattack and/or impale depending on the situation), working around "area taunt isn't a good idea if there is a lot of high level mobs in the range" is trivial too, pull the mobs you tank away from those you don't want to be affected by areataunt. Remember: Taunt does not only try to pull the aggro on you but ALSO generates hate when you already have aggro, so it makes sense to taunt even IF you currently have aggro, this ensures you don't lose aggro easily if someone heals you.
When I play with my tank I nearly never lose aggro to healers or damagedealers with this approach (and if so I get it back within a splitsecond), when I play with my healer and the group's tank(s) act correctly I rarely pull aggro on me either, not even with the infamous "aggro-magnet" bacta-spray

Likethe CL 20 commandos running around with a flame thrower and wondering why they always have a bunch of mobs after them and why they get incapped so much? I don't know, sometimes it's fun to watch
