Thread: This is going to make me sound like a heratic, but...
...as it stands now, TKA is a fallback profession. I wish it wasn't, but I don't see how I, or anyone else, can rely solely on this profession as it exists currently.
I started out playing SWG with the Marksman tree. My goal was to be a Pistoleer. Maybe something else like Smuggler, CH, Ranger, etc.. I decided to try out Smuggler which dictated that I had to take Brawler. Once I started climbing the Unarmed tree, I was hooked. Of all the different fighting classes, I was addicted to TKA. Yes, guns are cool, but there is something about going toe-to-toe with your opponent that makes each fight seem a bit more personal. For the most part, I was almost ready to ditch all of my ranged skills. I was a Master Marksman and completely untrained both Carbine and Rifle trees. However, I'm currently retraining them. Why? Well... ...as much as I love TKA, I'm not going to be able to get as far in the more dangerous areas of this game with "just" TKA.
Nevermind the PvP aspect, which being TKA has left me feeling is off limits to me. The PvE areas are also becoming harder to work with. Don't get me wrong; I know what power the TKA has in PvE. Virtually every creature in the game will, at one point or another, close ranks during a confrontation and beat on you. Having strong TKA skills will make the difference between surviving that conflict or ending up at the cloning center. But TKA is not enough. We have no bleeding attacks, which doesn't make much sense since are weapons are, by definition, suppose to cause physical damage like bleeding.
We don't have abilities near those of ranged fighters when it comes to special moves. Yes, we do have things like stun, blind, dizzy, etc., but only one type of multiple target attack. If we get attacked by multiple opponents, we can't apply stun and blindto every target. The only thing we can do is to try to take each target out quicker and use the multi-strike when possible. Ranged have many more "crowd control" attacks than we do "and" bleeding. While I think it is complete cowardice to stand at maximum range, fire one bleeding shot, then run away like a chicken and wait for your opponent to bleed to death, I have to admit that I've been in some situations where I see this being the only hope for survival. Especially if you are up against a large group that will kite you all over the planet if you try to take them down legitimately.
So... ...I'm not going to ditch my TKA. Even if it isn't the most effective combat skill, I enjoy it too much to let it go. I'm going to take another elite profession to compliment melee. Not sure which, but at this point, if I want to progress into the harder areas of this game, I see no otheroption but to go this route. I sincerely hope they find a way to bring TKA up to speed with theranged fighters. Yes, I hear all the arguments from other players such as: "Never bring a knife to a gun fight!", "A ranged player should have the advantage in a fight!", and "This is the modern age, not the stone age!" but the TKA is not useless, just not as powerful as we could be.
Until we are brought up to speed, I don't see how we can be anything other than one branch in a hybrid template.
Rightly said!! I'm still building up to TKA master but Im pretty sure that my master scout and my med skills have been a great help. The next profession Im gonna focus on is squad leader. I think that TKA with Squad Leader will rock, or at least I hope so.

I guess i totally missed your point with your post cause from what im seeing as of yet, TK's totally own. IF what your trying to say is that TK Master ALONE with no other skill points in anything but TK is useless then mostly i would agree. We take a beating BUT spend 2 or 3 points into Firstaid on the Medic skill tree and your already set. With first aid 1 i was able to use Stim B's with a power of 392 and have 35 charges in each. What else do you need, currently i have alot more skill points on that but lets just say a TK novice or greater only had that one other skill from what he has in TK, you can heal yourself for over 700 dmg with that 392 power Stim B.
Now with that said im a TK novice 0/1/0/0, Medic 2/2/2/2 and i carry those same stim b's, anything else is overkill and a waste of cash. ( i also have marksman for creatures that like to run and pvp- 0/0/4/4, entertainer for my mind wounds-0/0/2/3 and im a master scout) I now solo red instant death cons very very easily so for you to come out and say TK's arent a good class then i dont know what your smoking.
As i said in my first paragraph, yes as a TK novice or master alone it would be hard to survive with JUST the tk skills, but then again you show me any other class that isnt like that, if you had a carbineer with just marksman skills they wouldnt be good either.
It all comes down to the way you look at it, i personally think any combat tree with the basic first aid 1 on the medic skill tree works out fine.
I group, but when you get to the higher end game, groups tend to be larger and large groups can leave a frustrated meleer running pointlessly around, rarely getting in a hit. Large groups of ranged players means that the meleer doesn't get any timed specials in because the ranged attackers take care of those before the meleer gets near the target. Being kited does not get any less annoying as you progress.
And now there's a new problem: commandos.
They've been improved so that they're a desirable profession to be, so now there are a ton of them. That's fine, but the graphics of commando weapons leaves melee fighters working with a white screen. Not fine.
I am to lazy to retrain so I will probably just be asocial and solo until I complete my exp-earning. When I don't need exp any more, I'll be able to group again, stand in the back, and use a CDEF. It's a social game, after all.
Aegu, the problem with your argument against this post is that you are agreeing with it. Yeah you did miss the point. The point is that TKA can't stand on it's own, which you promptly went on to agree with by talking about all the other classes you use with it to make it viable.
Way to go. ![]()

I disagree.
I normally get to the mob when grouped as soon as I can, making sure the pets have aggro. Then I start out with unarmed Dizy/Stun/intimidate. Then I start dishing out my true damage.
Liriel-
As i had said i really didnt understand the post, if thats what he meant was solely TK, no other skills involved AT ALL, then yes i agree 100%.
But thats the beauty, after just medic-first aid 1 we are awesome. ![]()
Thanks for helping me understand his point lol.
TKA is my primary profession. I have attained Master status. I kill around 4 people for every death I recieve, assuming there are 10 or so that I am taking on to begin with. Since achieving mastery I have not lost a single 1 on 1 fight. Granted, it has only been a few days and a dozen or so encounters of that type, but still not one loss.
TKA is not a class. It is a skill to be augmented by other skills. Focusing solely on melee skills and neglecting to take up any other profession is not very bright. If you are felling like melee is not the way to go, then I encourage you to take up a ranged weapon as your primary means of defense, but I denounce your claim of melee inferiority.
